I joined the distinguished dumb a$$ club this morning. I forgot to latch the top the other evening, which gave me instant membership this morning when leaving Corpus Christi heading back to San Antonio. Fortunate for me, the top did a double flip and landed right side up in the road. It landed flat and only scuffed up some of the plastic interior trim and broke the rear latch lever. Thank goodness there was no one behind me at the time of jettison.
Too bad this isn't an Olympic competition as I would metaled today. 720 degrees of rotation with a perfectly stuck landing. Not a single scratch on the paint.
I was 100 yards from the interstate, so I count this as a blessing as this could have been a lot worse. I often wondered how anyone could be so stupid as to not latch the top. Well, now I know
Does anyone know if the rear latch mechanism can be purchased as a separate part number?

Wow, that could have been much worse!! Glad that the damage is minimal and no one was hurt. Here's a latch for ya:

I don't know, but Gene Culley at GMPartsHouse.com would.

I am going to call Kevin at Parts Taxi in the morning. Looks like I can get one since there is a reproduction on the link posted above (thanks - Bmorevette). I might use this an excuse to get a glass top that I was thinking of buying last winter.

You are not the first and you won't be the last. I just hope it never happens to me.

LOL, in retrospect, it was pretty funny. I was driving along, shifted gears, and then said to myself, "Wow, it sure got sunny in here" I looked in the rear view mirror and saw the top spinning. I pulled over and a truck stopped in front of the top and put his hazards on. He met me half-way holding my top and said, "I think you dropped something".

Glad no one was hurt and the top survived with little damage.
I must admit I drove off one day with the latches open. Lucky for me it started to flap a little in the subdivision and I latched it before anydamage was done. Did I feel stupid!!
Like they say: chit happens.

A few weeks ago I purchased these and thought I would attach them to the hatch handles somehow. I would like to be able to tuck them above the handles when the roof is locked. After reading posts like this, I think I need to get that done.

Ouch.
Glad it wasn't any worse. Since I'm a fixed roof coupe guy, I've had the top off my GS once to lube the latches and put the rubber o-rings on it to keep it quiet. My wife, who is a ragtop girl doesn't even know the top comes off the GS.

The blue oval crowd had many issues with the 69 Shelby.
Funny press and twist latches on hood.
Many of the originally hoods snapped right in middle at about 60 mph....
I think we all have done dumb stuff and later realized how luck we were.
Thankfully no one was hurt.

My girlfriend made me take the top off my GS coupe yesterday, while we drove around all day looking at Jet-skis. I told her to MAKE SURE I LATCH THAT SUCKER when we get back!
