Default buying C6 from owner, point inspection in Arlington, Texas

Dear Corvette owners,

I am in the middle of purchasing my first corvette. This week I will be meeting the owner of a:
2006 C6 black, hard top, 3lt, 73kmiles corvette. I will bring it somewhere to get an inspection. Was wondering if bringing the corvette to a GMC/Chevrolet dealer would be the best for this? Any recommendations? I have already looked it over and test drove this corvette. It is sharp, smooth and powerful. The carfax checks out.

I bet the dealer won't find anything wrong if you haven't.

Since it's completely out of warranty, it'd definitely be money well spent to have it thoroughly inspected. If there's absolutely no evidence of any accidents (no suspension or body parts obviously replaced), I'd start feeling much better. You can also tell a lot by the overall cosmetic condition of the car, especially on the inside. Also very important (at least to me) that the car has NO EVIDENCE of any prior MECHANICAL modifications, especially force-induction. But also tunes, since it's very easy to damage a motor (or significantly decrease its longevity) with a bad one. Plus a bone stock engine is much less likely to have been abused. A very important part of your research should be to search forums and see what modifications or issues the owner had during his ownership. And yes, it'd be a lot easier if he gives you his user ID, but if he put the car for sale here or one of the other few Vette forums, it'd be relatively easy to find out by year and color (it's obviously a base), plus what you already know (auto or manual, options, location, etc).

But if you're buying from the ORIGINAL owner, at least you have the chance to 'interrogate' the owner, and get a feel for what kind of life the car has had. And chances are the original owner is a mature individual, since these cars are not cheap new. Just use common sense, and don't 'fall in love' with the car before making sure it's the right one. Having a knowledgeable Vette owner check it out can also give you extra piece of mind. Try your regional forum. Car looks great, by the way. But I can tell right away the owner is not ****, just by looking at the crooked front license plate . Good luck.

I am not an expert by any means. I would feel conferable if a mechanic looked it over. I believe it is worth the time and money.

Take it to LG Motorsports in Wylie, TX. They forgot more about the C6 than most dealer mech ever knew.

As an alternative, you can give John or Kerry a call at Twentyfirst Century Musclecars. They are also some of those people that what they don't know about Vettes is not worth knowing.

Super folks.

I like your thinking. A dealer that services a lot of Corvettes is a good bet. Talk with the Service Mgr about what you want. Their body guy can inspect the car also. Not all repair may show up on car fax. Depends on the repair shop. A computer/diagnostic check is beneficial. They should also be able to tell you the repair/service history. Run the VIN etc. I would ask them to do the check Chevy does to certify a vehicle. Again, I think such a check is $ well spent and certainly good for piece of mind.

If I was taking it by a Vette shop, I would have them pull the codes. I took my 2006 by a shop that specializes in Vettes before I bought and they ran the codes and found a couple of things. Nothing major but they were things I wouldn't have known about if I hadn't run the codes.

The codes can tell you an awful lot.

I am also trying to post a picture. I put [img] [/img] after the link and it still won't work. Do I put anything before the link.

I have found if you add a link it usually shows up. If not edit your post and do "add image". I usually have to play around and edit my post of few times to get it to work and it wont show up until you post.

Thanks for all of the information. The experience of being corvette owners is very valuable to me. I got a sales inspection and everything came out working great mechanically. I have purchased the black 2006 corvette from my friend last Sunday. Here are some pictures.
