Default Why Hasn't My LS7 Blown Up Yet?

Many seem to be negative toward the ZO6 on this forum so I figure I'd share my almost five years of real world ownership of my dreaded 2007 Z. Mine has 33K bone stock miles and not even a whisper of trouble but for a catalytic convertor. No strange noises or,no metalic particles in the oil,no ticking at idle. What gives? BTW she was built on 1/12/07.

I really hope you didn't just jinx yourself... they have issues as I'm sure you know with the valves dropping.... Ive been wanting a Z for a while now but finding one at a good price with gmpp is next to impossible. I would never buy a used Z without the gmpp. Hope you have it cause if you do drop a valve than your in for one hefty bill! I hope you rZ brings you many many more problem free miles.. Good luck with it.

As I have stated on here before. If you don't abuse these engines they are a good as any of the LSX series. I have 18k on mine with absolutely no issues. And no I don't baby it. Only had it 3 weeks and took it the Z06 Fest and drag raced. Mine is stock except for CAI and
tune.

A buddy of mine has an 08 Z06 and at 8K miles the engine blew. The car was totally stock. Luckily GM covered it under warranty. He was accelerating at about 3k RPM when the engine just went boom. Here is the carnage.

What's left of piston and ring 2..

Fact is, a very low percentage of LS7's develop problems. I've had my 06' since new, and road course track it on Hoosier R6's, several times a year. Never had any problems, but do have GMPP thru Sept. Guess I should look into extending it a couple more years. There were some known bad valve springs on early 07's, but believe there was a factory repair bulletin on this.

LS7s blowing up.
S65 BMW main bearing failure.
Hemi auto trans Challenger timing chains snapping at low miles.
New 5.0 Ford mustang #8 piston failure.
And many more.

Its a machine and you are going to get some failures, whether its from a bad tune that detonates it to death, flat out abuse (mis shifts) or a bad part that causes a failure its going to happen to some of them. Buy new, beat it into the ground and let GM worry about it for the next 5 years.

That being said I wouldnt buy a used C6 Z06 without some kind of warranty unless it was super cheap, but there are a lot of other late model performance/sports cars (especially imports) I wouldnt buy without a warranty as well.

You have to be kidding right? If it does happen it's nothing more than coincidence and would have happened regardles of this thread.

Op, that is awesome.

As for folks buying used ones w/ no warranty, imo you should have 8-9 large set aside for LS7 replacement all the while hoping you never need it.

Your buddy missed a shift, IMHO. I've been there and done that!

I have too many friends in the NE Illinois, NW Indiana and western MI area that drive them, and find the cars reliable. They all laugh at the posts on here about the "bad" engines blowing up. Of course, they all know how to drive the car also.

Even with half of all reports coming from highly modified cars with cams, unknown tunes and significant track miles, the rate of failure still appears to be below 2% for all years combined.

Take the cammed cars out, and its around 1%.

I think OP will be okay. . With that said, I plan on having my heads checked within the first 50k miles just because I bought the car used and I suspect it might have been tuned (no warranty).
