Smart Key Part
My key is always coming apart. Well needless to say my daughter lost the black part and went to look for it. She found it alright but she had run over it . How do I make sure I get the smart key marked 1 when i get a new one ?

if yes,
then when you get a new fob, you or dealership will have to program it to the car. old fob is still programmed into the car and will stay to the car until erased. you can program #3 to the car but #3 & #4 wont do any memory settings, only #1 & #2 fobs will. i'd say you will have to have good and destroyed fobs erased from car, reprogram old good fob and your new fob both back to car. finally re-memorizing setting for both to your preferences.
dealership can sell you a fob, erase memory, reprogram them or you can get your own fob and do the erase/reprogram yourself.

Other than the number, the "2" fob is identical (until you program it).
Except, would you believe "2" is less expensive?

2. Ordering a new fob is easy. Programming it can be tricky:

3. I'm guessing your fob gets abused. A $7 jacket might help protect it.
Tip: Get different colors for fob #1 and fob #2.
4. Your daughter ran over the fob and you're gonna fix it?
Just a thought: Give her the option to take care of it. She might surprise you in a good way.

You can get the newer 08' up fob programmed to the previous model cars, but personally wouldn't bother, as the older fobs are much more rugged. If you do go that route, shouldn't be a problem getting the new key cut to match the older one. Like many here, own other cars, with only one key hanging from any of the fobs. All the daily keys are kept seperate.

And from outside the box, I have heard that some people have gotten an IPod jacket and it works. You could get one with a belt clip, leather, etc.
I have the silicone rubber ones in BRIGHT orange from Southerncarparts and am VERY pleased with them but Jim doesn't carry the newer 2008 and up models as far as I know.
BW, here's another hint. If you use Windows, right click on the pictue and select properties to see where the picture is coming from. In this case, there you will see the store name that is hosting the picture and so is the one probably selling them.

I need to replace the battery in my fob and using the "Nickel" method resulted in the front cover splitting/cracking along the edge of buttons. I can't seem to seperate the two halves of the fob shell without completely destroying it.

The '05 thru '07 fob does not have this problem...maybe a solution for you.
The #1 and #2 fobs have different part numbers...whether the dealer knows that or not. Also all fobs are the same electrically, so after programming, a label can be stuck on a fob that tells its' number. The order of programming determines the number of the fob, in spite of whatever number is stamped on it.

It comes with a mini-screwdriver (junk) mini-phillips head (junk) AND (the good part) 3 very rugged plastic/composite pry tools.
I use them for anything I want to open, pry, pull apart, etc thats made of plastic or aluminum-or really anything I don't want to scratch or mar up. All 3 pieces allow great leverage, too.
One tool I really like of the 3 is shaped like a guitar pick, but each side has different thicknesses of an "edge"...so it easily takes the place of a coin or metal flat head screwdriver.
I've opened my key fob 2-3 times with it without a hitch.

If the guts (pc board) are still good, then you can swap them into any GM 4-button case. No programming required.
Check with the service advisor or sales manager at the dealership to see if they have any odd ones from cars they sent to auction or the body shop had that got totalled. Check the Cadillac dealer too.
