Should I test drive a ZR1?
They just got a 2011 ZR1 at my local Carmax. I have an 08 C6 and I can't afford to buy the ZR1. Carmax will let anyone with a drivers license test drive any of their cars, no questions asked. Is it totally messed up if I take it for a joy ride?

Well, I own one, and every time I get out of it I'm smiling and thinking to myself, "Holy crap, I can't believe they actually sell these monsters."
So does that help?
So does that help?

If you punch the accelerator at all, you'll HAVE to buy it!
I spent 2 days on the track in one, at Bondurant. It was intoxicating!

yes, but only if you promise not to kill the car, russell. we had one doofus on here decide he "needed" to do that to his C6 on a highway far from where you are.

Personally, if *I* was the one in your shoes, no, I wouldn't drive it. I don't think it's right to intentionally waste a salesman/woman's time and effort (and gas/tires/etc.), nor would I want to tear up a car that someone is eventually going to buy (sort of, in an indirect way, disrespectful to the eventual owner).
However, on the flipside, there's nothing actually wrong with doing it. Carmax owns the car currently, they set the policies, they're well aware of the consequences (joy riders), so they are welcoming you to do it. I'm sure their concept is to get people into the showrooms with tasty bait like free rides in a ZR1, hoping you'll buy a different car if you're not serious about that one. And, they just want to be perceived as a no-pressure organization, helping their overall image, and encouraging people to buy from them next time, even if not this time. So, hey, do what you want.
Personally, I wouldn't. But, I don't think it's "wrong" if you do.

Selling cars is the bread and butter for these salespeople. Personally, I would feel guilty wasting their time and giving them false hope you might buy the car. Remember, these salespeople are just working folks like most of in the forum. But if that doesn't bother you, go for it!

I briefly worked in sales also and I completely understand the point about wasting their time also...

Don't do it. Same reason as others- taking salespeople away from being able to make their living...
unless...
you give that salesman $50

you give that salesman $50

Perhaps . . . . One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.
Maybe honesty . . . . "I'm not in a position to buy right now but would appreciate the opportunity to take it for a test drive while you have 1 available"
