I put in a Carbon fiber dash. I had to remove that switch and reinstall into my new one. It just snaps into place. You must have pushed awfully hard for that to happen. I had to fight to R&R mine.
Actually I did have a problem with mine when I replaced that gauge surround piece that holds the switch. The hydrocarbon one I got had those two plastic brackets spread a little too far to hold the switch in place. I had to hold a lighter up to it and melt it a bit so I could squeeze those plastic brackets closer together. Then the switch slipped between them and locked into place. In your case though I'd guess it just wasn't snapped in there all the way.
Same EXACT thing happened to me when I was installing my hydrocarbon cluster bezel last weekend. Didn't heat it up but did finally get it to snap into place. PITA.
