A6 With 2.56
Greetings.
Just curious of how many owners with base coupes that have A6 and 2.56 rear?
I'm one, 2011 Cyber Gray A3 package. I often wondered if changing the rear to a 2.73 or 3.10 is worth the expense for more acceleration? My driving is just street and freeway.
Your thoughts and opinion please.

All 2011 base coupes are 2.56.
The expense of going to a 2.73 probably isn't worth it - that's less than 10% for probably a barely noticeable gain. If you look a the quarter mile list, I think it's fairly evenly divided between 2.56 and 2.73.
You can go lower, but at some point first gear becomes pretty useless unless you increase the tire size, and at that point you'd be better of trading in for a GS for all the money you'd have to spend.

We have 2.73 in our 2009 Z51, I like it but wouldn't go through the big hassle to change if it was 2.56
IIRC, the deeper gear will make the car feel "livelier" in ordinary driving and passing, but 1/4 mile times are very little different.

Finalist 2020 C7 of the Year -- Unmodified
The A4 in the C5 cars came with 2:73 gears and a optional 3:15 gear ratio which was a better reason to upgrade than A6 C6 cars that have 2:56 and a optional 2:73 gear ratio . Not worth the change go with the NPP option instead and get the extra 6HP and 4LBS tourque!!

Do a search and you will find threads on the exact differences. 0-60mph is about 1/10th of a second difference at wide open throttle...how often are you there???

My 2006 A6 has the 2.56 rear and it is fine in everyday driving and going across the road.
Of course Jackie would NEVER mash the throttle where the rear-end might kick out to the right, so I can't tell you too much about hard acceleration.
I believe either gear would be fine, and as others have posted the difference in performance should be quite minor.

Gotta keep the total driveline gearing to the rear tires in mind. An A6, has a 4.05 1st gear. So with a 2.56 axle, about the same total as a 60's muscle car with a 4.11 axle.

I went with Chuck CoW's 3.42 diff and 2800 Pro Torque stall converter and couldn't be happier. The responsiveness from the gears is fantastic. I can easily pass cars on the highway in 6th. I don't "have" to downshift at all if I don't want to. Of course, putting it in 5th to do so is much more fun! On the main roads, I love what 3rd does.
The car is so much more fun to drive.

Back to over all gear multiplication. My M6 ZO6 with 3.42 axle, actually has less 1st gear total gearing, than an A6 with 2.56 axle. 1st gears basically spin city on street tires. With todays gas prices, think I'd be puting some thought into doing this, before jumping up a lot on the axle ratio. GM, doesn't build any Vette to be slow.
