Default Fob occasionally non-responsive

My 2012 3 month old Corvette has occasionally failed to recognize the fob. Sometimes it says "no fob" when I push the start button but I just wave it at the dash and it's OK. Other times I push the start button and nothing happens except that the little yellow engine light lights up. Then about 5 seconds later, the dash lights up and goes through its little start-up routine. Then I can push the start button again and all is well.

And this is only with the #1 fob. I keep forgetting to swap fobs and see if it does it for both.

Is this a common symptom? It doesn't happen nearly enough that I can bring it in for service, so I'm not going to waste my time. If it's a common thing, then I won't worry about it.

Replace the FOB battery and see it the issues are resolved. A few dollars at Wally World should solve the problem.

The yellow light is accessory mode. You are pushing the bottom of the switch rather than top. When you hold it for 5 seconds it goes into an "ignition on" mode which is what is lighting everything up.

On my 07 vert and my 08 Z06 if my phone charger is plugged in it does not see the FOB. I did an experiment on this. If the phone charger was plugged into the center console no FOB DETECTED. If the phone charger was not connected the car DETECTED the FOB. Same if you have your cell phone in the same pocket or hip with the FOB no DETECTION. No phone, FOB DETECTION. This was done with new batteries installed in the FOB's. It was the same for FOB 1 & 2. Anyone else do this type of experiment?

Yes, lots of electrical devices can cause electrical interference that will prevent the radio signals from being properly received by the car and the FOB. You just have to experiment to see which devices are noisy and which aren't and keep the noisy ones out of the communications area when you are trying to use the FOB. I carry my phone on the right hip and FOB in left pocket and have never had a problem but I bet if I would put the FOB in my right pocket it would be less reliable since it would be nearer the communications path from the FOB to the receiver in the driver side B column.

I have two fobs (1/2) and the second one does this also. I know of three (3) options: 1) Go to Wal-Mart and purchase a CR2032 battery
(2) and replace the battery in the fob. Be careful when you take the fob a part, everything will come flying out, try not to touch the circuit board and make sure the battery is placed with the + down. 2) Try resetting the fob as you do a new one and 3) Replace the fob. Usually in my case changing out the battery works. Good luck.

I would have to agree that the best place to start would be to replace the fob battery. If this does not seem to resolve your concern, I would recommend contacting your local dealer. Please feel free to keep me or Evan update with your progress. Thank you.

And if you replace the fob battery, be sure not to get the Ray-O-Vac battery. It has a rough, textured surface on the "+" side and doesn't make good contact in the battery slot.

I sometimes have a similar issue with locking and unlocking with the fob. In my garage from a long distance works every time, although when in a large parking lot ie lowes, HD it doesnt work until I get much closer. Cant figure out why, I installed new batteries 6months ago so I know that is not the reason. Anybody?? Bueller????

I sometimes get No Fob Detected when my fob is under my money clip/wallet in my front pocket. Once I take it out of my pocket, the car recognizes it.

What is the easiest way to open key fob without damaging or scratching it up? At one time I used a coin but still ended up scratching it up.

+1 on the battery.

As far as opening up the fob a coin or screwdriver is pretty much the only way.

Resetting could cause other issues and won't help this issue. When you program a FOB to the car what you are doing is storing the ID of the FOB in the car's BCM memory. Every FOB has a unique ID number burned into it when it is manufactured. When you program a FOB you are storing this number in one of 4 slots in the car's memory. Memory slots 1 and 2 are set at the factory before delivery. When you reprogram you are entering a number into slot 3 and then slot 4 so reprogramming an existing FOB without erasing everything first will change it from 1 or 2 to 3. Only 1 and 2 have the radio and seat memory functions, etc. So you will lose functionality unless you erase all FOB numbers and start from scratch with the long procedure. That has it's own perils if you get everything erased and then have an issue with the new programming. And, in the OP's case you will gain nothing because the car already has the correct ID number in memory as evidenced by the fact that it does work intermittently.

Next time you get "No Fob Detected", put the fob in the glovebox slot.

Then the car should start even with a dead fob battery.

If not, then the fob might be damaged (they are not indestructible). Is the case cracked?

Thank you. Just went through this with my '07 C6. Both FOBs dead. Replaced the batteries and they work perfectly now.

Thank you!
