Default 2012 Nav update killed MP3 functionality on my 2005 C6

Got the 2012 Nav update DVD part #22820294 yesterday. After introducing the disc in the unit a software update started. After the update, the unit did not recognize my MP3 CD anymore. Pulled the CD out, got it back in, still nothing. Took the 2012 Nav DVD out, put the 2011 one (part# 20980238) in. Now the MP3 CD is partially readable as it lists some of the songs but it only plays one particular song regardless of what I chose. Any ideas on how to fix this?

That is strange. I don't have the latest nav disc in my 05 but recently it has trouble reading a CD of any kind.

Haven't heard about a 2012 software update. What is it? What is it supposed to do? Link to any info?

This software update started automatically when I inserted the 2012 (v8) nav DVD in the slot for the first time. It seems to have rebooted the unit once in the process. The navigation part worked well after the update but it failed to read the MP3 CD that was in the unit already and played well for some months. Hoping I might be able to revert the changes I pulled the 2012 navi DVD out and introduced the 2011 navi DVD. There was no software update this time and I am now able to see some of the MP3 files but it will only play a particular song and nothing else. The only other difference I noticed is that before this software update, all MP3 files were listed in all caps and the pauses were replaced by underscore, after the update the files are listed with upper case/lower case just as they are originally on the CD and pauses are no longer replaced by underscore.

One small data point:

We had a 2006 and then got the newer nav discs for 2007,2008,2009.
We traded it for a 2009, then got the newer nav discs for 2010,2011,2012.

None of the discs has ever done anything that appeared to be a software update, they just sit there and provide slightly newer maps and POI info.

The 2009 did get a software update in 2010 to solve the "no screen after start in cold weather" issue, but the disc for that update stays at the dealer and we did not see the update being performed.

EDIT: We don't play MP3 or any other CD much any more, we're using a PAL + Ipod and love it. Last time I used a CD (factory) was about 6 months ago with the 2011 nav disc in the car, worked normally.

If you're wondering why we spend so much money on nav discs, it's because we drive this car all over the U.S and want the latest maps. Unfortunately, they aren't really all that recent, just like the factory navs in our other makers' cars.

Try this and see if it works:

Remove all disc's from the unit.

Pull the radio fuse so there is no power going to it, easier than disconnecting the battery.

After about 5 minutes put the fuse back in. Basically, wanted power off completely so that any stored valued in the unit memory are gone.

Try putting in a CD and see if it works.

If it doesn't then pull it out and insert the new Nav DVD.

If there was a glitch during the first install maybe it will reinstall correctly.

Re-try the CD.

If it doesn't play then it's time for a visit to the dealer.

Have an '05, using a newly (about 6-9 months ago) ordered 2011 disc, version 7, it never did a software update when I installed it and I have the mp3 update, never a problem, sounds like something changed with version 8, maybe reinstall the MP3 update software (discs I assume), see if that helps, good luck....

I just pulled the radio fuse for 5 min and tried again. The MP3 CD has 120+ songs on it, the unit only sees 14 now and it only plays 2 of them now. Called GM NAV Disc toll free number and, as expected, it was a waste of time. They only thing they do is to check with me if I put the CD in the correct slot.
@RobLo - 2012 (v8) uses only one DVD for the whole country as opposed to 2 DVDs for all previous versions. That's probably why there is this software update in this version.

I'm a bit afraid to run the MP3 update again, I remember it was only supposed to be run once.

We switched from the 2011 discs (two disc set) to the 2012 disc (v8) (one disc) and the unit did not do any update that i could detect.

But our nav unit is newer and also has had the update to fix the "blank screen" problem, so there may be more differences than we know.

EDIT-
Others have commented that the system sometimes has difficulty reading MP3 discs that are not factory made, I suppose it's possible your problem is just a coincidence? Not likely, but possible...

I had the MP3 update done 3-4 years ago. I burned the 2 discs and tried to run it again and it doesn't run. It's probably because it's already at that version or newer.
My unit used to read the same exact mp3 disc with no problems prior to this update.

FWIW, I believe the "won't play MP3" update was different from the "no screen upon startup" update; but that info probably won't help you any. Good luck with this project.

Seriously, if you give up but still want lots of your own music, look into the PAL + Ipod system, with Kawal's installation cable. I think they have a version that will work in your 2005.

I think the problem is that GM changed the software coding for the navs after the '06 model year and you will need to find an OEM nav from an '05 or '06 and then have the MP3 update done by the dealer.

I had the MP3 update done by the dealer 3 years ago. Tried to do it myself yesterday just in case the 2012 nav update flashed an old version and the update didn't start. I assume that's because the software is already at that version or newer.

Not sure that my information will be of any use but I have a 05 and a 2012. Shortly after I purchased the 12 I put the version 8 nav disc in my 05 and it updated software and rebooted the nav. I haven’t used mp3 for several years since I added the ipod lockpick but did manage to find a old cd with a few mp3’s and they all play fine. The problem is that I don’t have a mp3 cd with folders to test.

Ok, update! I just used Itunes to create a mp3 cd with a folder. The 2005 reads it just fine and displays the playlist. It will play part of each song but not the entire song before it moves to the next one. The cd works fine in the 2012.

After updating my 2005, I also can no longer play MP3s that I was capable of playing fine prior to the update. All I get is an error saying 'no disk loaded'. I haven't tried non-folder or standard CDs yet.
