So I'm leaving work, open the hatch, take off my jacket, throw in back and close hatch. Now I'm locked out. Stupid fob is in my jacket pocket. I don't know why it won't open, the fob is in the car...

I think there is a timer on the car to open the doors automatically in 20 years(if the battery is still up), just for those that throw their jacket in the rear with their FOB in the pocket, where there are no sensors to read the FOB.

That sucks. Wish I could help but no idea.

One time I was inside the car (engine turned off) and the car lost the fob signal. Doors would not electronically open from the inside. I had to use the connection box in the glovebox. Once it was plugged in there, the car reacquired the signal and all worked again. Only happened once. No idea why but I guess your car did the same.

Good luck. I assume your spare fob is at home. Is that far?

There are no antennas set up to detect a fob in the hatch area.

Although I don't think the owner's manual is clear on that, or even mentions it. However, it has come up here on the forum frequently (about once a month on average).

You've got to have a spare key hidden under your car somewhere, kept on your body somewhere, or else just always, always keep the fob in your pocket.

You are about the 500th person to do that, so don't feel lonely.

Solutions for now:
Extra fob or key, at home?
Onstar, if installed.
Bring proof of ownership (insurance card?) to a GM dealer, I think they can cut you a trunk key.
Lockout service from locksmith, but may cause damage.

For future:
Spare key hidden outside the car.
Spare key in your wallet.
Spare fob at home where someone can bring it to you.
Activate Onstar, if installed.

My own solution has been to keep the fob & key separate from my other keys. Put the fob & key in my pants pocket when I get dressed in the morning and never take it out of my pants until undressing in the evening. Also, spare key hidden outside.

Not a bad idea to try it, but it's about 99% likely it won't work without the fob outside and near the rear hatch.

Ive done that twice!! Had to call the damn locksmith.....he put a hanger thru the trim and scratched that F out of my trim! :-/

Went and tried it. You are correct. I was surprised as I thought it would work.

Hopefully, I will not have this happen to me because I only take my fob out of my pocket to lock the car as I am walking away.

Stupid FOD. You need to get a smart one. It won't open becuase it is set for auto lock. Read the manual and/or watch the DVD.

Yep, you found the "dead zone" in your hatch.

Keep a spare key handy. And make sure it actually opens your hatch.



Most places that make car keys can copy yours for under $10/each. Use key blank B-106 (same as a Saturn).

Well, people were locking their keys in their cars long before the FOB came out so I don't blame the FOB, its just another car key. There needs to be a place in the car where the FOB can be secured and not unlock the car and the hatch area is it.

I once was working a job site where the rule was you had to leave the key in your car so it could be moved if needed. I locked my key in the company car so many times I ended up sticking a coat hanger up the frame rail. That car probably went to the scrap heap with that coat hanger still there. I've locked myself out of a lot of cars with keys but I have never locked myself out of the C6 because I keep my FOB in my pocket. It goes into the pocket in the morning and out in the evening but otherwise I never touch it.

My wife's car works like that. Impossible to lock fob in car. Results in more electronics, and just something else to beak
