Default OnStar to the Rescue!!

Had a bunch of running around to do today, Post Office, bank and a few others. I was at the post office getting boxes out of the hatch for shipping. It was cold in the morning when I left and it was warming up so I threw my jacket in the hatch, forgetting I had my keys in the pocket.

Went inside, mailed my packages and returned to the car..... Door wouldn't open... Oh Crap,... wait a minute, I've got OnStar. I put their number in my cell a long time ago. Made a quick call, and in less than one minute the doors unlock...And I was on my way...

Gotta love it...

What if you didn't have Onstar? (I don't). And you don't have a 2nd key.

Just wondering what I would do if it happened to me.

I'm starting to think that I should get one of those 'hide-a-key's for the trunk key. That would be the poor man's version of OnStar.

Does the magnet with spare key have the hands free cell phone too?
I would be interested in it since we now have a distracted driving law and the vehicle in which I use the Onstar does not have Bluetooth, so I can converse freely with other people with out fear of a ticket. Also, does the spare key with magnet that might also have cell phone capability in it have towels in to put down BEFORE you have to reach waay under to get it out when the ground is wet or dirty? If so, I am in for sure.

I have OnStar active on all 3 of my cars. Today was only the third time I really used it. The last time was this last July 1st. On a dark country road I was the only witness to a very serious motor cycle crash.

With no address or actual location to give the police, I used onstar to get help. It might have heped save his life, I was a pretty gruesome sight to have seen happen only about 15 feet in front of you. He hit a deer running about 60-65mph. Note.. he, not the bike hit the deer. Mostly with his face and chest, he had an open face helmet. He and the bike first hit the road less than 3 feet from my drivers door. Yes I was in the Vette.

No, but it can get you into your car in some cases when OnStar can't. For example, if you are locked out of your car without access to a phone, then the magnet with a spare key will get you in your car. Without the hide-a-key, if you can't contact OnStar you're screwed.

The OP kept a cell phone in his pocket (he called Onstar), but not the fob.

Right. I was just talking about a hypothetical situation where your FOB is locked in the car and you don't have access to a phone. In that case, it would be good to have a hide-a-key.

I just keep the FOB in my pants pocket, seems to be an easy way to avoid all the drama.
