Default Question about Rotors

I have a 2010 Grand Sport can I turn the rotors on it or do I have to just buy new ones?

They have to be over a certain thickness, so when the brake guy has them he can measure and then it's decision time.

What type of brake pads do you have?

I have had no luck turning rotors. My understanding was that they were treated (chemical and heat) and turning them removes much of this protection. They will tend to warp within a few thousand miles. For that reason, I always replaced with new.
Realistically, how many times are you going to replace pads? Unless you track the car, you may as well go for new rotors. IMHO.

Most brake manufacturers no longer recommend turning rotors as it weakens them and makes them prone to warping more the next time. Warping would be the only reason to turn them, it is not an automatic thing in spite of the fact that many places just do it as part of a brake job. If the rotors are over the min thickness number, just replace the pads, if not, or if they are warped, replace them.

and one of the reasons many (but not all) mfrs. recommend replacing rotors vs. turning them is because OE rotors are now thinner than they once were---all in the name of saving weight (and money).

Buy new rotors, your just putting a band aid on somthing. Start fresh rotors and pads. If no track use look at the Carbotech 1521 compound.

I bought new front rotors for $150 shipped online (non-vendor)...those were OEM Z06 rotors. They are cheap. The ones which I replaced had over 70,000 miles on them and were in decent shape, they probably had another 10-15,000 miles left on them.

Why do you want to turn them? If there not warped they probably don't need turning. Many shops want to turn them when they do a brake job just for additional revenue and in most cases it's not necessary. In all my days of doing brake jobs on my auto's I've only one time had them turned and that was due to them being warped.

I have 91K on my 05 C6, and just replaced the front brakes for the first time. Pads still were good for several thousand miles, but I got a great deal on new pads ($100 off using my GM credit card). Rotors were fine.
