11/11 Dallas Veterans day Parade-a great day for the warm & fuzzes.
Today Dallas held it’s annual Veterans Day Parade in downtown Dallas. A call was put out several weeks ago for 100 Corvettes to carry WWII/Korean Veterans in the annual parade. As the parade date got closer, the demand became larger. It seems that the turnout from the older veterans was surpassing the original estimate by almost 100%. Because of the increased demand, a call went out to all classic car clubs, BMW and Porsche clubs for convertibles to handle the extra demand. I don’t know the final numbers, but it was rumored to be close to 180 veterans although the local news tonight was quoting 300 plus.
I was one of the many who volunteered to chauffeur a veteran for the morning. My rider’s name was Ross, a Marine Corp Vet of the 3rd Marine Division. Because he had broken his finger (of all fingers to bust, it was his trigger finger) back on the farm when he was a kid, Ross was left with a lack of mobility, unable to bend it more that 90 degrees. It took a year of pestering before the local recruiter gave up and told Ross “OK, I’ll ship you on out to San Diego (Camp Pendleton) and if they say you’re in, fine, if not they’ll ship you back home”. The medics at Pendleton did a scientific test…they asked Ross if he could pull the trigger on a rifle. Ross replied, “Hell ya, I’ve picked a squirrel out of a tree at 50 yards with a 22 back home”! Needless to say, Ross passed the test with flying colors.
It was an honor chauffeuring Ross in the parade, listening to his stories……sometimes more than once...... twice....or. I’m already looking forward to doing this again next year. Should you find yourself next Veterans Day looking for something to do, come on out and enjoy spending the morning with some real hero's!
