Default So I Went To Carmax Yesterday!

Close by, gave it a shot! Had my 2013 G.S. 2lt coupe, with 4700 miles appraised! They offered me $42,000. The previous day I had ordered a 2015, and my local dealer offered significantly more, to trade in, when new car arrives in Nov - Dec. Especially considering sales tax advantage. Of course, dealer has a lot to work with, when receiving full msrp!

A couple of thoughts, do you own the 2013 GS outright? If not what's the value of not making payment for 5 months (Aug -Dec). If carmax gives you at least what you owe, by not having to make payments you might be ahead on any tax savings vs trading it in.

The real question is how much did you pay for the 2015......with trade versus what you could have got it without trade. There is probably 10-15 grand mark-up on the new car.

Thats good to know because I have the same car only with 9000 miles, chrome rims, two tone interior, npp and red calipers. I was wondering what I could get from car max but it is a one and a half hour drive to the nearest one. I love my car and have no intention of selling but was always curious what they would give me for it.

When a dealer handles both ends of the transaction they win. While it may appear they are giving you more for your trade in, rest assured they are making up the difference on the sale end.

If you have the patience you almost always do better by keeping these two transactions completely separate.

Selling your car first then negotiating a straight sale price is usually the best way to buy a car. I have gone the trade route a few times and I know I left money on the table trading, but it was so much easier to do it that way. If you can't sell your old car for a fair price then trading is the only option and sometimes if you have a high demand vehicle the dealer will treat you better on the trade prices because they know they can move your car easily and turn a profit.

Corvettes are high demand vehicles and you have negotiating power with a GM dealer because they know they can move a Corvette and turn a profit. The way I looked at it is I know the dealer has to make a profit, but I'd just as soon they didn't rob me to do it.

I bought my GS from a small GM dealer in the country and it was exactly what I'd been searching for and I was afraid someone was going to buy it before I had a chance to make a deal on the car. My wife had a 2012 Impala LTZ that we'd decided to let go to get the Corvette and she was going to take the SUV I'd been driving. I figured a GM dealer would give me a good trade in value for the Impala on the Corvette so that was my plan. Their first offer for the Impala was ridiculous and I told the salesman I'd just buy the Corvette straight out and sell the Impala to Carmax the following week. I told him we'd come back the following day, since I was by myself, to pick up the Impala. He said "let me go back and talk to my Manager" and then they came back with a trade value I could live with and I did the trade for my Corvette. I was prepared to make another trip to take my Impala home and then take it to Carmax and get them to buy it and that's when the dealer realized I had some idea what they were trying to pull on me. They wanted my Impala and I'm sure they made a nice profit on it later.

I probably could have come out a little better selling to Carmax, but not enough to warrant another 200 mile trip to get the Impala and then dealing with Carmax so I went the trade route and I got the car I'd been looking for for a couple of months.
