The thread was started two and a half years ago and there is more info in it that you will care to read. Including mufflers cut in half to show how they work.
The sound is greater because you are drilling near the tailpipe exit so the exhauset doesn't travel as far through sound deadening chambers.
I did it couple of years ago and am still satisfied. But I am an old man who didn't need it too loud. No drone is nice which you take a chance with in aftermarket exhausts. No need to cut the big outer hole...just drive a 1/2 or 3/4 bit through it till you feel it go through both sides of the pipe inside the muffler.

I was contemplating just removing the mufflers and running quad tips. Why not try this first, as most owners will discard their factory cans anyway, when buying aftermarket.
Here's a thought! Wonder what it would sound like with equilateral holes drilled in it (one on each side of the can)?
Now where did I put my hacksaw?

I drilled a set of holes last year and it was a little louder but not loud enough for me so I drilled another set of holes into the chamber where the fiberglass is. I left the fiberglass in the muffler and it got a little bit louder but does have a little drone now but not much I cant really notice it. I bet if the fiberglass was all pulled out it would drone more. Now I just ordered cutouts so I will have the best of both worlds without spending over a thousand for aftermarket exhaust.

Here's the way I see it.
Your not putting a hole saw to your car, not damaging the car itself.
Its the muffler your cutting into which is a disposable replacement item, same as brake pads & tires. At some point in a vehicles life you'll probably need to change the muffler anyway. So why not give it a shot. Worst case if you don't like it or mess it up just get that set of performance mufflers you wanted in the first place, just sooner.
I may try the B&B Fusion when I retrofit mine to an NPP set up someday, in the mean time this mod which I've done has a suprisingly good sound.

i did this today, but i just drilled 1.5'' hole thru case and both sides of internal pipe. then tig welded a plug back in. used a air grinder to smooth out welds and with a lil black paint cant even tell anything was ever done. sounds pretty good. still have to have a freind do a flyby so i can hear it going down the road.

That seems to answer my question. The link with the instructions doesn't exactly say to drill thru both sides of the inner pipe but the picture seems to show that. And from the looks of the pictures, you drill in about 30-45* upward from the bottom center of the muffler, correct?

After seeing this post I did it yesterday. Just the sound I was looking for. And the best part is when I downshift with the paddle shifter I can FINNALY hear the engine!

Did the same. Made a vid before the mod and right after.
I didn't hear a measurable difference even when I ran the vid
through my surround sound system. Gave it a shot and ordered my Flowmasters the next day.

resurrect an old thread
Since I'm considering doing this, I thought I'd resurrect this old thread and add the latest Youtube sound clip for a Z-06 which has the mod done.
