Default Active handling saved my bacon

Well I take no pleasure in admitting I lost it in a turn, hydroplaned shortly after it started raining.I thought it was over for sure, 4 wheel drift at speed.."Stick a fork in him he's done".Well it never happened..everything slowed down (in my head) as it does in those situations and I could feel my car making minute "corrections" or adjustments and to my astonishment it straightened out! And I went on my merry way Albeit a little numb.Trust me I wouldn't even be admitting this, let alone writing about it, if it wasn't such a miracle.I don't know who to thank, God or GM engineering?

You can thank GM for the active handling. It does work well if the car isn't driven too hard. I'll bet you'll take it easier in the rain next time. Glad you and the car are in good shape.

I once tested the system in my '99 C-5 on a slightly snow covered road that's straight and open for a mile. It was so cool how it worked and kept me going straight when I deliberately forced a slide. It would straighten me back out quickly. But having said that, its important to understand that there are limits to what any system can do as good old fashioned physics can get in the way. In your case, you got close and it saved you. You were lucky.

You might have got it under control without AH but without a doubt the system does what its supposed to do...at least up to a point. I'm glad everything worked out.

it's good of you to write this up for all to see, and any who choose to understand. it can happen regardless as to whether it's the driver, the car or the conditions ("it's my crappy ____ brand tires", "it shouldn't happen in a $50K car", "I know how to drive", etc.)

as to the engineers or a higher power---well said by Neo---and maybe a small dose of pure luck. drive on!

Well, I shook hands with GM Engineering. I'd start there.

Same thing happened to me last year....I was making a left turn at the light....I made the turn and gave it the gas and the back end went snakey and with in a second the rear end straightened out like an arrow.
Thanks Traction

But dont always rely on it and think its going to save you......I was lucky that time.....

Always remember this too, most motorcyclists know this: the first 15 min. when it starts raining is the most critical. Why?.....because, the oil and grease thats imbedded in the roadway comes to the surface due to the weight of the water flushing it out...thats when the roadway is extremely slick.!

glad you did ok!

Active handling, like anti-lock brakes and traction control are fantastic and prevent many accidents, injuries and deaths, as do seat belts, air-bags and OnStar. We are blessed to live in an age of advanced automotive engineering.

I've had the nannies kick in a few times on dry pavement, never on wet. That really would get your attention!

Thaks GM
