Default Check Engine Light Leads to Scratches

Took my 07 to a dealer in Philadelphia for check engine light and gas gauge showing empty when tank was full. The found the fuel sending units bad but car was out of warranty by 3 months. E-mailed GM to see what they would do. After 3 days, GM said they would cover under warranty, $1400.00 to fix. Took the car last Tuesday. They told me it would be 2-3 days. On day 3, the service dept called and said they broke something underneath the vehicle and would have to order the part. They said it would be in on Monday. I called Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday asking the status and they said they are still working on it. I found out later that their only vette tech was out sick. Why wouldn't they just tell me the truth? 10 days later (today) they called and said the job was finished. When I went to pick up the car, I checked it over before I went into the service department. I found 2 large scratches on the rear bumper. I had the service manager come outside and he said "this is unaccepable". No ****!!! He said he would call their body shop and have it fixed asap. So I still don't have my car yet!!! This is why I dread taking my car back to dealers for repairs. I only go to them for warranty work.

Unfortunate......and unfortunately, not uncommon......but at least GM did the right thing covering you out of warranty. Stay on the dealer to get the paint repair right. Then drive and enjoy.

Stuff happens but most of the time they aren't anymore likely to damage the car than any other shop.

Did you check the mileage?

Sounds like they screwed up your car driving it around.

Why do you say that? There was no thing stated that would lead to that conclusion.

Really?

You scuff up a lot of bumpers sitting in one place?

Sorry to hear that, but par for the course. I had an awesome Vette tech in Libertyville, IL (Kevin), but haven't found a real solid, passionate Vetter yet in St. Louis. I hear the Elco guy's not bad so I'll try him next. It's the porter who parks it, anyone on the lot walking by ... impossible to ascertain how or what exactly happened. Get the fix, see if he'll throw in a little somethin somethin (3-4 free LOFs with YOU watching!, free alignment, ...) & call it a day. If painted properly, nobody will ever know! Rock steady, my man!!!

A lot of performance shops are also certified to do warranty work for GM, maybe look around your area for one. Mostly I would say they handle cars with more care than a dealer.

I'll say rocker panel.
I had a similar thing happen on my previous car, a Grand Prix. Was in the shop for nearly a month getting a new tranny and they gave it back to me with a dent in the front fender.

On the upside of this, GM did right by you covering the issue out of warranty. And at least the service manager didn't flinch when he saw the bumper and immediately took action to correct it.

It's stories like this that give dealerships a bad reputation.

I work at a dealership service dept., and take great pride in my work.

Hopefully all is resolved.

Don't forget to buy a few tacos for service mgr. You have just made a friend for life. It has been my experience that service mgrs are super good guys who will bend over backwards to keep the customer happy (if it is a reasonable/legitimate complaint).

The short of it is: Respect the guy, and he will remember you. Too many people use too much vinegar.

If you live in San Antonio, Tacos may be a good idea as a gift. In Norwood, PA a Philly cheese steak might be a better idea........ or maybe a Taylor ham and egg on a hard roll.

Had the same issue this past summer, Fuel guage went out. Local Corvette shop recommended I try a double dose of Techron first before anything else, amazingly Guage came back a day & a half after trying it.

btw sorry for your misfortuneate, chevy dealer broke my rocker 4 years ago and overfilled the oil to 7qts because the tech was convinced all 400hp motors are ls6... when they offered to fix the damage i laughed at them "you cant even change oil, you want to repaint my car?" another vette owner overheard the situation and left before those menaces had their hands on his c6 z

Was just notified by the dealer on Friday that they need to send to their body shop and have the rear painted. Now I need to worry about them blending the paint!!! I guess I'll see my vette by the summer!!
