Default Okay to ask about service history?

Hey guys... quick question. I know it's taboo to ask for a CarFax history report, so please don't go there... but is it okay to ask about the service history on a particular car?

I found a car and I'm curious about what has been done to it so far, and if the existing warranty is still valid. Any help would be appreciated.

VIN: 1G1YY26E375119175

Thanks in advance.

Mark

Of course you can ask about service histories. I work at a dealership (not GM, though) and we print 'em up and put 'em in the deal jacket for the car. A complete history of dealer warranty repairs and service on a vehicle you are considering should always be available for the asking. Ask the salesperson or sales manager to print one up for you. If they won't, I'd want to know why not? They're not top secret.

And, I don't get the CarFax taboo thing.... Except for the fact that they're mostly crap and all kinds of bad things happen to cars that don't show up on the CarFax, and they sometimes get even the most basic information wrong, like the in-service date of the car, if you want one the dealer should give you one. It costs them a few bucks to get one, but boo-hoo. They're still going to make a profit on the car.

Get as much information up front as you can. 'Cuz, if you take delivery of the car and find out bad stuff later, they ain't taking the car back.

If you are buying privately and no history is available you may want to look elsewhere.

Reliablechevy posted a pdf with the service history listed. It had A LOT of work done to it in '07. If it were me I might stay away from that car.

considering the last logged entry is 50K miles, I am really surprised at how many things have been replaced on that car, a Museum-delivery car no less. I also saw that one line, "buyback"....something or other. not sure what that means. it does look or seem as if much of this service, repair, and parts were paid for by GM. still, it is a lot of stuff.

as to GM VIS, it is their own proprietary system and no one else but a dealer service dept. can access it, I've been told. with the VIN, you can go to any dealer of any brand and get the same report for free, your car included, Mack.

Most likely. Lemon laws vary by state. In Utah its 3 attempts to fix it within the first year.

The 30 and 50k entries (last two) have dates reversed. The car looks like a piece of crap and it doesn't look like GM has an idea how to fix it permanently. I would run away from that car.

Looks like they replaced the engine in '07 as well. I think I would look for another car, but they have replaced lots of parts, so maybe it's new once again.

My 65 SS Impala has had less roadside assistance than that Z has, I would stay way far away from that puppy, It was built on Friday the 13th by a bunch of folks with hangovers...

If I remember some of the Z motors had to be replpaced for some reason or another. Remember they are hand built motors and a world class Beast.

As for the rest of the stuff, it seems mostly mechanical and fixable.
However I would hate to throw that kind of money around and have to start fixing it.

Good lucka nd let me know if I can help
