It's a microphone.

It is used for the voice commands for your navigation radio of so equipped and for voice communications with Onstar.

And in my car I think it's deaf. It either doesn't hear or doesn't understand anything I say. I've tried at least 50 commands from the list and it will not respond to a single one of them.

After owning a Honda Accord along side my 06 vette both w/Nav and voice commands I marveled at how well the Hond'a system worked/responded and the depth of the commands vs the Corvette's.

I've stopped trying to use the vette's Voice Commands years ago. Maybe GM should buy a used Accord and take the nav syatem apart and copy it.

I *wish* mine would do that instead of what it DOES do.

Me: "gas stations"

Nav: "The system is showing all the pizza restaurants in split screen night mode"

ARGH!

I don't use the telephone because it doesn't get the dialing numbers right. Till/when/if it finally does, your frustrated.

Same problem with my 2009 Bluetooth. Works well when sitting still, but anything above about 30 mph (windows closed, NPP quiet) and it can't understand the numbers.

We dropped the Blockit sound mats into the car and that improved things somewhat, good up to 40 mph, then Michelin runflats and it's good up to about 50 mph; but it's still a really poor system.

The funny thing is that once i do get connected, the other party says my voice quality is pretty reasonable.

Voice recognition software has really come a long way recently and the improvements just haven't been integrated into the system.

Does anyone know what the rectanglular black box is that's located to the right of the rear view mirror? I'm guessing OnStar ?
