Default Buyer Beware

I just purchased a 05 with a clean one owner carfax and autocheck. When I went to my state farm insurance man to add it to my policy. It came up with 2 comp clams one for 1100 one for 8200 and a 3rd that was a collision with property damage also that was over 8K and all 3 clams were a year or more old.

Some thing to consider when reading carfax reports.

that's a new one on me: your insurance agent has info that doesn't get into carfax or autocheck. sorry to hear about that for you, but good info for us.

Sorry to hear. Did you find details? Anything to be concerned with? Do you have any recourse?

I guess we should do an insurance check before we buy used cars now. I wouldn't count on carfax anyway since somethings don't seem to make it to their report.

Over 16 grand worth of repairs or claims? You darn right I'd be very concerned....

Isn't there a guarantee about Carfax - if you find something that they didn't catch they buy the vehicle back...or did they stop doing that? That commercial used to run often in the past.

What records is your agent accessing? Never heard of this. I always thought the risk was an unreported accident/repair that never made it to carfax or any other reference source for that matter.

it looks like the agent is pulling insurance claims on the vehicle, not directly pulling repair claims.

The latest Carfax I ran in Feb 2010 contained the following paragraph:

GUARANTEED - None of these major title problems were reported by a state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If you find that any of these title problems were reported by a DMV and not included in this report, CARFAX will buy this vehicle back.

The list consisted of about 15 items including "Accident/Damage Indicator"

I would immediately contact Carfax and discuss the situation.

not disagreeing with you, but what would the difference be betw. an "insurance claim" on a car and a "repair claim?"

I mean if it's paint damage from acid rain, I'd still want to know (and kind of expect it from Carfax, et al). But if it's theft from leaving something inside and nothing is broken to gain entry, I'm ok with not knowing that.

But still...$8K collision with property---how can that NOT be car and property damage?

And when you contact them, make sure you tell them that you relied HEAVILY on the carfax report when you purchased the car.

I wouldn't trust a Carfax if it indicates a clean record. It only means nothing was reported.

I just bought a civic si for a winter driver carfax showed an accident on that.

I wonder if the car in question was just repaired without going thru insurance?

That's exactly correct! Carfax can be considered pretty much worthless.

Did the car buyer pay for a carfax report, or did he get the report given to him by someone else. If he didn't pay carfax, thay might not stand behind the report. Just sayin'.
