Most posts in this thread talk about the pre-2008 models with the glossy plastic. Does that change things in terms of painting? I'm really wanting the matte black finish as seen in the 2012+ models. The shiny fake carbon fiber looks chintzy.

Did this to my son's GTI....looks great but it scratches easily.

I believe GM's hydro carbon is clear coated so just scuff it, dewax it and paint.

I'd accidentally scratched the top of my bezel during a shifter swap operation and even with a very fine grain sander managed to scuff the scratch area and now it looks just as bad. I've been wanting to paint the console matte black anyway but am nervous about it looking horribly aftermarket or being easily scratched/scuffed, like you said.

Anyone who has done this before and who can provide pictures would be greatly appreciated!

I covered mine in carbon fiber fabric wrap. Still looks great years later.

I saw an idiot paint his bezel with what appeared to be latex paint with a paint brush.. Totally ruined the bezel He had a theme to his car and it was just so rigged and looked like crap. It was a fan favorite for some reason and won a trophy. I sometimes just don't get it

I did mine with RustOleum Universal in Titanium Silver, which is a near perfect match for Machine Silver. It has been on there since 2008 and is looking fine.

The center console pictured is a GM accessory. I used an adhesion promoter then regular automotive paint on the rest.
Sorry to ask a question that's unrelated to the thread but what wheels and sizes do you have on your Vette? Your avatar pic looks great! I really like the stance.

Default Question

I know this thread is OLD, but I am planning on painting my scratched silver trim around the radio and DIC buttons. I have the adhesion promoter, base color and clear I want to use, but my question is.....should the trim be scuff sanded with say 600 or 800 grit sandpaper and then primer applied before using the adhesion promoter, or do you just shoot the adhesion promoter over the factory silver, then base color, and then clear? Thanks for any advice!

I had a local body shop paint my center console and the wings around the gauge surround. Since it's a prominent part that I'd be staring at a lot I didn't want to take a chance screwing it up and I wanted that "wet paint" look. I am very glad I did because I'm sure that I wouldn't have been able to achieve the super gloss finish that I got. While I had the center console apart I also installed an MGW Shifter and Redline 2-tone leather boots/armrest cover. I also swapped out both of the cigarette lighter plugs for USB power ports.

First thing you should do is clean the trim piece with a wax and grease remover to get rid of any oily substances that may be present , then I would wet sand the console with a 400 grit sand paper then paint , I don't think you need any adhesion promoter if you do a good job sanding but I assume it wouldn't hurt, if you shoot the clearcoat soon after painting then sanding in between coats wouldn't be necessary, if you let the console cure before shooting the clear then you would need to wet sand again and now you would use a 600 or higher grit sandpaper, I would go with 3M 1500 grit.

LOVE IT! I have a Daytona Sunset Orange Metallic car too and it is nice to see the finished product. Really pops!
