Default Here's A Tip For You

Put the new GS in the lift yesterday to detail, pressed the toggle switch to on/accs to release the shifter (A6) to put in neutral to spin the rear wheels for cleaning. Well dummy me, let the lift down for the evening and called it a day.

Put it back up today to finish waxing, etc., couldn't get the door open with the FOB, nothing's working, startin' to panic now, WTF.

Used the key on the FOB to open trunk lid, pulled on the door release to enter, and lo and behold, left the shifter in neutral, and of course the accessories mode was still on, which of course drained the battery. Who knows what the hell else is on when the accs toggle is on.

Well of course the battery is dead, on slow charge now. Gawd, I hate getting old. :o

Hmmm...I know mine shuts Acc mode off after about 20 mins or so. Maybe a difference between Auto and MN6? Or did you actually have it in run/engine off mode?

Probably. C5's, I know my way around a little bit, new to C6's.

Started up, everything seems to work except the windows not shutting all the way up. You know how the window opens and closes a tad when opening and shutting the door, that's not working now. Will I have to re-program something to get that back to normal?

Thanks for any help.

Yes - you need to re-index the windows.

Get in and close the window, keep the switch up for 3 sec. after it reaches the top. Let go, then hold the switch up for another 3 sec. and that should be it.

It wasn't accessory mode that did you in, it was neutral. The car needs to see park to shut the systems down.

That worked, thanks, I appreciate that.

Nice to know there are some smart people on here as opposed to this big dummy (me).

FYI, you also shortened the battery life by about 50%. Starter batteries are made to take shallow discharges, not deep discharges like this.

When it fails, don't blame the battery.

Can you tell I work for a battery manufacturer....

Can I blame half the battery since half would be my fault?

Now I'm paranoid, thinking I'm going to have to replace it any time now.

Thanks for the info.

Hope you don't have issues with your battery now. I have heard that once it is drained it will never be the same.

Glad to hear you put it on a slow charge. If it is a Trickle Charger-1.25-1.50 amps, should be o.k. Good luck.

Interesting. I never would've suspected this.

So, an A6 C6 should not be parked in neutral... even with ACC off, I'm guessing the system will never fully go to sleep. And the battery will drain more quickly.

Then you are the right person to ask about a good battery tester for a DIY'er to have in the garage. Any recommendations for under $200 ?

Sorry for the slight OT

Batteries have a lot of individual variation. We see people here who flatten the battery once and it never really holds a good charge after that. But we also see cars sitting at the dealership where the battery goes dead once a month until the car finally gets sold, battery works for years after that.

I've had several batteries that went complately flat a time or two but lasted a good while afterward.

If I were the OP, I'd charge it up and see what happens. The only issue would be if your life conditions would make a dead battery somewhere, dangerous. The battery is covered by the 3/36 warranty.

Good luck...

Is there a way to test a battery for damage due by one or more discharges?

There is a load test that is better than a simple voltage test, but nothing seems to be accurate every time.
