Default slightly different angle

Taking a slightly different angle on this thread... providing my final "contenders" at each purchase or ownership point and/or some background. I'm 33 so the list is shorter than some of the older members lists.

1. 1987 Pontiac 6000STE - Drove this car when I was 17-18. This was my parents car that they parked for about 18 months before I started driving. Mechanic told them the engine was shot. I fixed it with a $25 intake hose that was badly torn and missed by the mechanic (idiot). Gave up the car at around 100k due to trans issues.

2. 1985 Olds Delta 88 - Car was a tank but I drove it like an absolute lunatic. Scary in retrospect. Horrendously underpowered V8. Inherited this one from my Grandparents to replace the Pontiac. Totaled by an acquaintance while driving out to college.

3. 1989 Mitsubishi Starion - First car that I picked and bought. Didn't really have a short list since I was buying used and was budget constrained. I seriously considered the 2nd generation RX7 and the earlier 300zx.

4. 1998 Honda Prelude - First new car that I bought when I graduated college. I had this purchase narrowed down to an Integra GSR and a Maxima SE. I made the right purchase, I never should have gotten rid of the Prelude. Great drivetrain and a uniquely appealing style that I still like to this day. One of the very few cars that I regret giving up.

5. 2001 Honda S2000 - The Prelude was leased and the S2000 replaced it. This car was really my fallback. The car I wanted was a used 1999-2000 BMW M-Coupe. I couldn't find the right car for the right price. Ran out of time and bought the S2000 instead. 9k RPMs was certainly fun. I really liked the S2000 but wrecked the car badly when it was fairly new and decided to trade it in just before the warranty expired since I didn't want the car long term with the damage history.

6. 2004 Subaru WRX STi - This is my current daily driver. Basically narrowed down to the EVO and the STi. In retrospect, I would have preferred the EVO. I prefer the EVO 8's exterior styling, I like the handling a bit better, the engine has more potential and I like the Recaro seats much better. The back seat is also bigger. On the other hand, the STi has side airbags. The STi has treated me well with about 65k on it. Would love to move to either on 08 Vette Z51 or an 06-07 Z06.

7. 1992 Olds 98 Regency - Still have this one though not for long. This was my grandfathers car that I inherited when he passed away. Pretty decent car but I never ever use it, there is something up with the linkage and I just dont have interest in futzing with it. Car has 45k original miles. Wife re-learned to drive with this car when she moved out of the city.

8. 2001 Olds Intrigue - This is the wife's daily driver, which I picked before we were engaged. Got it with 9k miles on it in 2006 as her first car from an elderly man. Not bad for a cheap, used, low miles car. Has the "shortstar" engine which makes it somewhat unique -- 6cyl version of the northstar. She is looking to move to a crossover, perhaps the new Subaru Outback or something similar.

I don't want to offend anyone - so let's just say that I'm more into performance than cruising.

[disclaimer]I know plenty of folks who own Harleys and I like them anyway[/disclaimer]

True, the imported bikes are faster and handle better at high speeds, but you can't beat a harley bagger at slow speeds and around parking lots. My Dept. has both and the Harleys are the best maneuvering bikes in the worlds. Go to a competition sometime, it's amazing how the bike officers can move around on them.

I have a friend who is a retired motor cop for the city of Houston. He now works for H-D in Milwaukee as the manager of fleet and police sales. He taught me a lot about handling at low speeds when I got my Goldwing.

Yes - it's amazing what he can do on a Harley. But the Goldwing is actually very easy to maneuver at low speeds as well. I've done as many as three circles in my driveway at full lock without touching down. But I'm no match for the motor cops. They are by far the best riders I've ever ridden with.
