Default How to deodorize seats

My seats are the culprit in a odd smell in my new to me 08 coupe. The previous owner smoked in the car but the smell is not smoke. I have cleaned the car very well but the smell keeps coming back.

I have cleaned and conditioned seats many times. Tried the baking powder trick. And tried a bowl of vinigsr overnight to soak up odor.

Any suggestions on really getting the smell out of the seats?

How do you know it is the seat covers?
How did you clean the seat covers?
Could it be AC odor?

I clean my leather seats with Lexnol leather cleaner and a soft brush and the wipe dry with a soft cotton towel

Might help with preventing further smells from getting into the seats!

Seriously, I use the Zaino leather cleaner on my seats to get/cover any odd smells I might have and if that doesn't work I use this stuff:http://www.atmosphereproducts.com/pr...ium/index.html

Spray it in the car. Let it sit overnight, works like a charm.

Have you checked/changed the cabin filter ? You can also spray the cabin filter and carpets with Frebreeze.

I cleaned the interior very good. Changed the cabin air filter. Air from the vents smells clean. But when I sniff the seats I smell the scent like a musty perfume smell.

I use the lexol cleaner and conditioner too and love it. After I clean the seats it smells fine. A few days later the smell comes back. I don't know if the smell is in the sear cover or in the foam.

I figure if it is comming from the cover that can be cleaned out. But what if the smell is in the foam?

Btw- the smell is not a gas odor more of a stinky perfume used to cover smoke smell.

I have sprayed ozium in the car and fevreeze too

He may have farted in that seat.

Which if he did, then you have an entirely different set of problems.

You say above: "The previous owner smoked in the car but the smell is not smoke..."

Thats a dead giveaway that it's a seat cushion filled with residue from farts from as far back as who knows when.

There are two effective ways to manage your problem, one more expensive than the other.

You can remove the seats and take a broomstick and attempt to beat the farts out of the cushions.

If that fails, then you are looking at buying new seats.

I'm hoping that your carpeting has not been affected as well, since the dietary habits, and the length of the previuos owner's commutes, will have an affect as well.

Good luck.

Try this it worked for me.Get a paper bag ,roll the top of the bag down and put a few charcoal bricketts under the seat for a few days.Charcoal absorbs most odors.

And if that doesn't work . . . light um and start all over. All kidding aside, hope you find the problem.

Are you sure the smell is coming from the seat or is it coming from under the seat. I took my new Malibu through a car wash that cleans the inside of the car and a couple of weeks later we started noticing a very strong smell. No matter what we did we couldn't get rid of it. Then I was cleaning the carpet and reaching under the seat and found a small cardboard that was producing the smell. Once removed the smell was gone within a couple of days. The detailer must have placed it in the car to give it a new car smell after he worked on the car. Not sure what triggered it to make such a bad smell a few weeks later but it was the culprit.

pretty sure it is coming from the seats. I have cleaned under the seats and haven't found those goofy wafers.

The carpet smells fine.

Is there a way to maybe stem clean the foam with the seat covers on? or should I continue to clean the covers even though I believe the odor is coming from below the seat covers?

I don't think you want to clean the covers too much. The leather portion of the seat is dyed and depending on the chemicals you are using you may start to remove the dye. If it is the foam then the only way to get the smell out would be to replace the foam.

Is it possible the foam has been replaced with an aftermarket foam. I put some custom seat covers on my C5 and the aftermarket foam that I purchased had a strong chemical smell that took quite a few months to dissipate.
