Insurance Myth??
From MSN Money today
Myth No. 6: Drivers of sports cars get more tickets and thus pay higher insurance premiums.
Fact: That's not necessarily the case. According to a study released in 2009 by Quality Planning, leading the pack with the most violations are drivers of the Hummer H2/H3. Hummer drivers have almost five times the average number of violations. Drivers of three Scion models (tC, XB Station, XA) also made the top 10 list. Others on the list include drivers of two Mercedes-Benz models (CLK63 AMG, CLS63 AMG), two Toyotas (Solara, Matrix), the Subaru Outback station wagon and the Audi A4.

It all has to do with the "classic" demographic that owns and drives the vehicle in question. Median age of Corvette owners is mid-50's - not exactly a high risk insurance age group. Likewise - the reason the Scions are so expensive to insure is because they are driven by youth in most situations. Repair costs also factor in - but the overall risk of the demographic is the largest determining factor.

The Vette is the most expensive insurance among the 4 cars I have...by $2/mo. But has the best coverage of any of them.
Would've been cheaper but I added aftermarket equipment insurance and better collision to the Vette.

I drove Mustangs for years, including in red. Never a ticket. I'm a very conservative driver and rarely do more than 5 over.
I had a red Jeep Patriot (4 cylinder crossover) for less than its first 2 weeks and got 2 tickets.
One, the cop didn't even know what I was doing, but heard the CVT on that little 4-cylinder rev to 5,000 rpms as I was climbing up a hill (long story). The other, the cop shot me going downhill and made a math error in his head. I was dumbfounded why he was lecturing me for 9 over (64 in a 55) going downhill and it was because he thought I 64-55 was 19 over.
I'd believe anything "tall" is more likely to be shot with a radar and "easier to see" over other cars. Red in a SUV -- even small/crossover SUVs like the Patriot, xB, etc...) is killer, as I've found out first hand. I still get pulled over, even though I don't speed, "just because."
My insurance did go down when I bought my C6 from a little V6 Mustang if you can believe that!

Just in case anyone is curious;
I just bought a 2010 Honda Civic *puts flame suit on* and I am paying significantly more to insure it than my dad is paying to insure his 2006 Corvette. I'm 27 years old with a clean driving record for 10 years, never had one ticket, ever, for anything. I was considering buying a used vette instead (also 2006) and my insurance company told me it would only be $400 more a year to insure the Corvette than the Civic, because there are so many Civics on the road (and a lot driven by kids I'm assuming), so many get into accidents. I RARELY see a Corvette driver speeding or driving recklessly.

That is because the majority of Mustang drivers are way younger than the majority of C6 drivers. They are a much higher risk demographic. THE SINGLE MOST EXPENSIVE COMBINATION TO INSURE IS A 16 YR OLD MALE WITH A MUSTANG!

I wouldn't be surprised if it cost more to insure a Mustang GT or Camaro SS compared to a C6. The C6s price and lack of a back seat limits it to certain buyers.
