Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval RFT..WOW what a difference..

Melting Slicks
Here's the answer that keeps getting blown over...its a misprint on the Tire Rack website. If you go to the Firestone website, you'll find that they are the same specs as the goodyears. It would not be right to try to put a tire that was two inches wider on the same rim...

New Firestone Wide Ovals "Indy 500" tire
These are a new version of the Wide Ovals. I spoke to the guys at Tire Rack and they just tested them last month. They seemed to like them so I jumped. Price was much less than the OEM tire and less even than Hankook. They ride better and seem ok. I do not think that they stick as well as the Goodyears, and if I was going to take the car to the track, I may not suggest them. For the street, they are a great value and the car is nicer to drive versus the harsh and loud OEM tires.

I personally think the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position are the best tires Firestone/Bridgstone has. It's the same company because my wife works at the plant and from my experience in the past with my C5 the Bridgstone are a slightly better tire. You can't go wrong with either but the Bridgstone will give you better wear.

In Miami I was quoted $1,265.45 for a set of Firestone WO RFT installed (incl tax and 4-wheel alignment). $100 less w/o the alignment. Dealer wanted $1,549.72 plus $106 for a set with alignment.

I am trying to decide between the
Firestone
Firehawk Wide Oval RFT
and the
Michelin
Pilot Sport A/S Plus ZP
The Firestone are about 200$ cheaper for a set of four.

My Goodyear Supercar's are beginning to get thin at about 10,000 miles. Traction in the turms seems to be far less than when new.
According to the tire rack surveys the Firestone runflat appears to have one of the highest ratings across most criteria.
I'm leaning towards this tire, has anyone found a good deal on a set of four out the door in Southern California?

So I leave work early to get to my appointment at Firestone, excited of course to get my new tires. The Firestone guy says "Sir we've been trying to call you all day, your tires won't be here until Monday". I was very dissapponted. Not only did I not get my tires but I'll need to leave work early on Monday again! So I ask him to make sure my number is working before I leave in case there is an issue Monday. He dials my number and says "See...busy". I say did you dial a one first? He tries again and dials a one...my phone rings.

The way I see it...
Firestone
Pros: Good tire , good price
Cons: May not be able to repair ANY punctures
Michelin
Pros: Good tire, good DEAL from Discount Tire ( free lifetime repair & balancing, some pro-rated road hazard coverage), maybe longer lasting tread life
Cons: Cost a little more, rear tires look???? a little narrower?
Anyway, I'm leaning toward the Michelins.

My OEM Goodyears lasted 26,263 miles and the rears still had some tred left but the inner fronts were worn as usual. They were so noisy though, I almost couldn't stand driving the car (I said almost). I wanted to stay with runflats but I don't like the Goodyears and the new PS2's are a little pricey for me so I went with the Wide Ovals.
I have read a lot of good things about the Wide Ovals and let me tell you, what an improvement. They are very quiet and the ride is a little softer over any kind of road imperfections. I can't report and handling differences or wet weather driving yet but I really don't push my car that hard around the twisties anyway.
For anyone who wants to stick with runflats and doesn't want to pay a mint for replacements I don't think you will be disappointed with the Firestones. Now I don't know how they'll be after I get some miles on them but I'll be sure to report back.
BTW, my toe-in was pretty drastic on the front tires (from the factory). It was adjusted to give me better tire wear and tracks straight as an arrow down the road.

I just put a set of the Firestones on last month, replacing BF Goodrich T/A KDW's which weren't even run-flats, and the Firestones are FAR quieter and ride better than the BF Goodriches ever did, all at a good price, AND run-flat peace of mind.

TR Review quote:
Initial Review, 35,000 Miles on Tires
August 28, 2010
I replaced the OEM Supercars with the Firestone WOT RFTs and they lasted quite a while - approx 35K miles - but performance was compromised for the sake of longer wear. I feel it would've been an excellent tire replacement for the base suspension. Now, I just replaced them with the Michelin PS2 ZPs and so far, this is the best tire for the C6 w/Z51 option. I'll see how long the tread lasts on this tire and then go from there. If you're thinking about replacing your Supercars w/same, then strongly consider the Michelin PS2 ZP. Excellent road handling, heat up fairly quickly and they perform better than the Supercars. If performance isn't an issue and you have a base suspension with the desire of moving away from GY, then this tire is absolutely excellent! The price is right and the tire performs as advertised. An excellent purchase for the base and F55 optioned C6s...
Oops... just noticed that the Michelins were PS2 not AS.

Got my Firestone WOT RFTs tonight. Pleasent ride home, which was just over an hour. Big improvment but then again my OEM GYs were pretty thin. Just over 1300 tax and all.

I purchased Firestone Wide Oval run flats from my Chevy dealer last May for $1102, including alignment, balance, and taxes. I have been extremely happy with the handling and how quiet the cabin is now.

I asked a dealer here in San Diego and they were like $1,400 without the aligment!
