American Sport Car
okay no bias please.....
I know everybody on this forum loves their vette but no BIAS!!! When people think of america and it's SPORT car. Which car do you think comes to their mind, like the flagship car of america. Like for example when I think of an asian country the car that comes to my mind which symbolize their sport car is like the Nissan GT-R.
1. Dodge Viper
2. Chevrolet Corvette
3. Ford Mustang

To tell you the truth, none of these cars meet my defintion of a true sports car. The Mustang is a four seater, so that doesn't even qualify. The Viper is a powerful and rough screamer, and the Vette is a well balanced touring two seater.
IMHO a real sports car is a small and nimble, open top roadster not built around a big horsepower engine. The Honda S2000, the Miata, the Boxster, the Z4, etc. are all sports cars. With cars like the Vette, you really are getting more into the GT class of cars.
However, given that there are no real sports cars being built in this country by American manufacturers, I guess the Vette would have to win by default as being the closest to what a sports car should be.

Interesting news on Viper
First of all the Vette is easily considered the American Sports Car just like no matter what Audi does Porsche is the German sports car.
Now about the Viper. According to my friend who owns a Dodge dealership there will be a Viper next year. They will produce 500 limited addition Vipers. After next years model they will stop production for approximately 2 years. Fiat will then release a supercharged version with a HP rating in the 600 - 700 range if all goes according to plan at Fiat.

"...no bias please"
Man...did you come to the wrong place.
While StanNH may be technically correct on the GT classification I disagree that a sports car needs a powerful engine. Certainly the old MG and Triumph TR models are sports cars but they lack the powerful engine (I had a TR6 and loved it).
Looking to the definitive source for definition (Wikipedia) I feel the Corvette qualifies as a "sports car."
"The term sports car has been defined as "an open, low-built, fast motor car." The term describes a class of automobile with two seats, two doors, precise handling, brisk acceleration, and sharp braking — trading practical considerations such as passenger space, comfort, and cargo capacity — for driving enjoyment....driving and mechanical performance is requisite...A sports car does not require a large, powerful engine, though many do have them..."
I take it a bit further to class my car as a 'muscle-sports' car but I know the Corvette is not a true muscle car. The Mustang IMO does not come close to being a sports car in the truest sense. The Viper is a sports car but its a 'johnny come lately.' When all is said and done the Corvette is (and has been for 50+ years) America's true sports car!

I certainly wouldn't consider the Ford Mustang to be a sports car, by any stretch of the imagination or definition. The Corvette is the premier American sports car - always has been (well, at least since the mid-50's), hopefully always will be. The Viper is a worthy competitor, but having driven quite a few of them, it really isn't a useable everyday car. Too damned hot and uncomfortable. Still, I'm glad to hear it will still be around.
Germany's # 1 sports car = Porsche
Asia's #1 sports car = Nissan GT-R
Italy's #1 sports car = Ferrari (or Lamborghini, Maserati, Alfa Romeo - love 'em all)
Britain's #1 sports car = Aston Martin (used to be Jaguar)
France's #1 sports car = Plaisantez-vous ?

An American sports car would be a SATURN SKY and whatever the Pontiac version was.Small,2 seater. The VETTE is to big, imho,to be a sports car.The rest in your first list are MUSCLE CARS,well, maybe the VIPER is more like the Vette.

The Corvette was America's only Sportscar long before Mustang or Viper were even thought about. I ought to know, my first Vette was a new 1955.
