Callaway SC580 or SC606
OK, I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a 2010 Callaway GS and need some opinions from anyone who has knowledge/experience. This is not a thread to debate the costs because I know you can get the same performance with cheaper parts. I'm paying extra to keep my warranty and the value a used Callaway car maintains over a similarly equipped modified car.
So here's my questions. Is the SC606 worth the extra $3,740 over the SC580? If I have my facts straight, the SC580 has a 3 vane blower producing 580HP/510 ft. lbs. and the SC606 has a 4 vane blower producing 610HP/553 ft. lbs. The SC606 costs $3,740 more than the SC580. The SC580 has a little bit of blower whine on acceleration whereas the SC606 does not.
For those who own either of these packages is there any annoying drone from the double D exhaust when cruising down the interstate? I'm going to go and check both out this weekend, but sometimes it's hard to determine just going on short test drives. Consequently, I would like to hear from those who have had some significant seat time.
If there is any other advice current or previous C6 Callaway owners would like to share I would love hearing from you. Thanks!

No drone at all. Just drove 700 miles from Dallas to Destin Florida. 72mph with AC on most of the way and average 26 mpg. If anything, I would like a little more rumble but I get tons of compliments on the "D" exhaust look and sound. 580 hp works great for me. I guess it would be nice to say I had over 600 hp but 580 is more than enough for me and I'm not sure the $3,700 is worth it. Hope you gets other opinions on this. I'll say this, once you own a Callaway you will be DONE. Its a great feeling knowing you have the best of the best.

I don't own a new Callaway but I have significant seat time as Ive spent several hours and hundreds of miles behind the wheel of one.
Some of the differences between the SC580 and SC606 (and their pricing) aside from the power, may be the carbon fiber hood bulge and exhaust slats as a part of the package - both are optional on the SC580 and are more than likely going to appear standard in the SC606 package.
While the SC580 does indeed have an intoxicating whine, the SC606 has an enormous "gulp" sound upon acceleration. Each are cool! If youre looking for quieter go with the SC606 for sure. The TVS is the newer technology, Id go that route. Don't forget the 40lbs of torque that come with the additional hp. I haven't seen a dyno but Id guess that torque gain is solid across the rpm band which earns a from me.
The exhaust has a nice rumble but is comfortable for long trips. No resonant drone.

I own a SC580...LOVE the SC whine during acceleration! Since mine is a coupe, I do notice exaust drone from the "Double D" setup. I installed the body insulation kit which helped considerably but still hear some drone. Since this vette is a coupe (previous vettes were all verts), I'm not sure how much of the noise is unique to the coupe vs. vert.
Since I don't track the car, 580 hp is quite adequate for my purposes. The addt'l 26hp (606) would seem hardly noticeable for the extra cost involved.
The 580 unit is available in a polished casing while I believe the 606 comes only in painted black, if this is a consideration. I just like the "chrome" look of the polished unit when you pop the hood...JMO and .02

More power is always good.......if it won't make a ripple in your overall finances I say why not?

I don't mind the SC whine so that's really not an issue. A dealer fairly near me is supposed to be getting a SC606 within the next couple weeks so I will have to see one in person.

shifter. There is a little drone at 1500 to 2000 rpm but with the manual trans I can easily shift out of it. I like the "whine" sound. It reminds me of formula one.
I am an engineer and about a year ago Reeves and I were talking about a method to remove heat from the engine bay using thermodynamic principles. I suggested slats in the hood. Looks like he thought it was a good idea. That said, I would definately get the slatted hood.

You might want to ask how much extra the slatted hood would be. I am sure it would be a good investment. The SC580 package includes an adjustment to the PCM that turns on the fan earlier and has it run longer than the stock setup. However, there is a lot of heat generated by the SC and the slats would definately help to discipate the heat. At the very least, the fan run-time could be reduced.

If your mind is made up already that its gonna be one of those two get the 4 vane blower. Dont go with the old technology. The newer one is much more thermally efficient and makes more HP easier with less heat soak.

While I have not driven a Callaway SC606, I have driven a Callaway SC580 and drive my 650HP Callaway C16 as often as time and weather permit. The engine in my C16 was used by Callaway to develop their TVS2300 package offerings and it was delivered to me last October. In addition to the TVS2300, it has bottom end work (pistons, rods, cam, heads).
With that said, I think that the extra $3700 is worth the additional power.
The TVS2300 is definitely quieter than the MP122 in terms of whine. It is not completely silent but definitely not as loud.
I hear no drone from the Double-D, just a very pleasant grunt especially as the accelerator pedal is depressed.
You will enjoy it.
Best Regards,
-Luigi

I too am very seriously considering a Callaway GS. I'm torn between the two packages as well.
I'd like to go with the 606 package. But, I sure want a polished supercharger, not a black one. I think Chris at Callaway indicated that for 2010 one will be able to get the 606 (TVS charger) in polished or chrome. I definitely want to see that confirmed.
I also like the standard painted hood bulge used on the 580 package better than the larger carbon fiber unit used on the 606 package.
If only one could get the 606, get it with a polished or chrome charger, and get a more flowing hood bulge painted to match the GS hashes (picture in your mind a Torch red GS with silver hashes and silver painted hood bulge with 606hp and a polished or chrome charger) Now that car would rock. And they'd have a deposit from me.

2010 Pricing will be released tomorrow. I will confirm, the polished SC case will be an option for the SC606 and SC652 (Z06-based) Callaways.
The color - combination you mentioned, sounds great!
