Default 2010 Grand Sport - Driving Impressions

Folks are bombarding me with questions on the 2010 GS Vert I picked up today. Very briefly, but will answer any specific questions.

I went from a 2005 vert to 2010 GS vert. Any comparisons are based on the 2005 to the 2010. Many of these have been hashed through in 2006, 7, 8, and 9 on the forum.

The steering wheel is smaller then the 2005, frankly much more comfortable. The radio controls are great because I have been turning the temperature setting for volume control for 4 1/2 years. My daily driver has the volume **** where the Vette has the temp control. Problem solved.

The blue tooth is OK, but it is a Vette and not a Lexus. I haven't figured out how to adjust the volume for listening. I'm deaf in two ears and can't hear with the others.

Interior: console very nice, shiny, smooth, better ***** and feel. The red interior used to have red seatbelts now they are black. The embroidered seats are very well done. They are worth the extra $. I did not care for the hash marks on the fender of the Z15 package and, therefore, could not get the GS embroidered seats. But the Vette logos look great and when you look at the interior you see three logos, the two seats and the waterfall.

Radio: To me a vast improvement over the 2005 Bose. Much more volume and I haven't screwed with the settings as yet.

6 Speed is far better then you guys ever said. The shifts are very, very sharp and quick. The readout on the HUD is informative and I love the X box when you try to shift too early or late. I like the placement of the downshift keys behind the wheel, very intuitive for me.

Body, you guys know what a widebody is so I can only comment that those rear tires on the vert look great. The body panels are dead on perfect. The folks that engineered this change did a first rate job. The gaps in the panels are dead on; time will only tell how they align after a few 1,000 miles.

Ride is very Z51. Tight, flat, planted. You know this is not a base suspension. Have not had a chance to push it yet so more latter.

Exhaust is Cadillac quiet. I did not get the NPP because I am installing Corsas as my first mod. The Corsa cat back kit with 3 1/2 inch tips for the GS automatic with the 2.73 rear is #14108. The 1st thing my wife does when I get a new vert is to order Corsa Sports. We both love the sound and when we are cruising at high speeds they are resonance free. Of course they are a much better balance of free flowing, resonance free, and great sounds around town. I don't think I'll get to 5 or 6 in the city.

Now let me enjoy the GS. I will answer any and all questions this weekend.

I am awaiting my new GS. Very similar, going from an 2005 to a 2010, got to see it being made at Bowling Green last week. Allied has it apparently, just anxiously waiting for it to be shipped.
Stan, can you tell me more about the ride. Is it harsh? just firm? comfortable? I am going from the magnetic ride suspension, to the GS. Would it be similiar to the sport setting?
Anyway, congrats... Have fun...

Thanks for the question.

I have had a combination of F45 and F55 as well as Z51's over the last 6 Corvettes. You will definitely find the ride of the GS as solid and tight as the sport setting on the F55, and probably more so. However, I have less then 100 miles under my belt and suspension/rides do loosen up with time. Then you have the reverse effect with EMTs, the older they get, the less tread they have, they ride rougher.

The one thing I can say for sure is you can feel the extra rubber in the contact patch. The steering is much more precise then the 2005.

When you get yours, lets us know. My personal conclusion this GS is everything the Z51 was and more. The only downside is the rear-end ratio in the GS goes down from 3.15 to 2.73 but you will pick that up with the extra gears in the slush box.

Stan, there is no downside to the higher rear end gear ratio(2.73:1) with the A6 vs the 3.15:1 with the A4. The final gear ratios tell the story.

A4...................................... .........A6...

1st gear 3.06 X 3.15=9.639..............1st gear 4.02 X 2.73=10.975
2nd gear 1.63 X 3.15=5.135..............2nd gear 2.36 X 2.73= 6.44
3rd gear 1.00 X 3.15=3.15...............3rd gear 1.53 X 2.73= 4.177

As you can see, the total gear multiplication in each gear is greater with the A6 in your GS vs the A4 in your old 2005. You have lower final gear ratios with the A6 with 2.73 rear gears then the A4 with 3.15 rear gears.
In 4th, 5th and 6th, the total gear ratio then reverses(A4 vs A6), but those are not the gears normally driven in when accelerating on the street.

Very nice reporting. Interesting that so many of us have GS's on the way and we've not only never driven in one, but we've never even seen one before! It sounds like you are enjoying it so far.

Default 2010 Disappointment

I was surprised that the 2010 owners manual and navigation manuals were printed on what I'd call pulp fiction paper. Even the case for the manuals is not nearly as nice as all the other Vettes I've owned.

Got to cut cost where we can...

Yes, I would be interested in your take on the ride after you've gotten more miles in it. I was SO tempted to get a Grand Sport when I ordered my 2010 but was worried that I might find it a little too firm for my liking in the long run, so I opted for the F55 and the regular coupe. I'll just have to give it a wide booty I guess.

Amen. I guess they will NEVER learn. I was very excited about the 2010 Grand Sport, assuming (you know how that works) that we would be able to get the wide body wheels/brakes/etc along with the F55 shocks, but, just like the freakin' 6 disk changer, GM is STILL GM, and believes, at some remarkably stupid level, that they (GM) are in charge (nevermind that Corvette production was down 52% from 2008 to 2009). I surrender!

Jimmy

PS. The funny thing is that I was wound up to get a 2010 GS convertible. Now, because I feel SO firmly that I will never buy another corvette without F55, there is literally NO reason to buy a new Corvette, as the regular car is what I have now!!!!!
