Driver Charged In Crash That Killed Berks Man In Delaware
State Police in Delaware say charges have been filed against the driver of a car accused of causing a crash that killed a Berks County man. It happened in the southbound lanes of Coastal Highway, north of Lewes, around 6:30 last night. Police say Rodney Long, 64, of Womelsdorf, was killed when the minivan he was riding in was struck from behind by a Corvette. The van went off the road. Long was thrown out and into a ditch.
He died at the scene. The van's driver and another passenger were flown to the hospital. They're both in fair condition.
Police say the driver of the Corvette, Tory Hess, 37, tried to attack the first officer to arrive with a club. Hess has been charged with manslaughter, driving under the influence, agressive driving, and menacing.
I wonder why the first officer on scene did not use lethal force on this fine citizen?

This drunken driver story is one of the sickest ever....makes me ill. This idiot killed a 19 yr old with his motorcycle while the poor kid was changing a flat on a bike path that runs along the side of the parkway......seems like there's another drunken tragedy every day.

"I voluntarily took 60 days off from OT"
A friend of mine borrowed one of his coworkers trucks to go to Denver to pick up some furniture...He left his Vette with the coworker...The coworker's roomate snagged the keys later that evening...Took it for a test drive after he went out partying....The result wasnt pretty...24 year old roommate did his best to outrun this 52 year old cop on foot....I may be slow, but I aint that slow ...of course it helped that he was drunker than Cooter Brown

This idiot could have been driving any car and caused this -- it IS too bad that he happened to be driving a 'Vette. I hope the prosecutor goes after him for murder. We've done that sucessfully here a couple of times in motor vehicle accidents of this type. Both were found guilt of murder -- not vehicular assault ---- MURDER!

As much as the libertarian side of me despises DUI checkpoints, I think the SCOTUS should rule it constitutional for a LEO to break the fingers of anyone caught drunk and failing a breathalyzer or blood test.

This guys should have never been behind the wheel of that vette. Real sad that someone lost their life because of this drunk imbecile. People who drink and drive make me sick.

moral to the story
I read the original accident post which is more lengthy and referenced in follow up post 2 to this thread. What do you know? The gentleman who died was ejected from the van. He was not wearing his seat belt. The lady (his wife) in the back had very serious injuries including a broken back. She was not wearing her seat belt. The third person in the van was treated for cuts and bruises. She was wearing her seat belt. I'm certainly not defending the Vette driver, he is culpable and deserves what he gets. But had the gentleman been wearing his seat belt, odds are he would have been alive today. Thus lotus blossum the moral to the story.
