Which to buy: A custom C5 vs. a plain C6
Before I get started, I apologize in advance if this topic has been debated over and over....
I know on the C6 board, the opinions will be different from the C5 board but I would love to know what people think.....
Here's the debate......A 1997 C5 with 100,000 miles that's been custom painted to a showcar level and has been modded with a cam package, Z06 suspension, and a bunch of other mods that make this car rock.....Car is a pure headturner and would easily standout at a corvette car show..lots of mechanical items replaced including the clutch, custom brakes, everything works, cold a/c...price around $20,000.....
or buy a high mileage (60-80,000 miles) C6 that is stock, maybe has a decent trim level, that can now be had out there for $22,000-25,000....car will have been driven, but let's say its been garaged, well taken of, original owner, let's say a nice C6, just with the high mileage hence the price reduction.....
I know many could answer with go with what you like most, but i'm just curious what you think would be the better deal down the road, I would think the C5 would hold its value a little better since its a unique head turner while the C6 will just keep being a high mileage used car.....of course, its still a C6, which some might say is better than any C5, no matter how nice it is...

It really depends on your plans for the car. Like you said, if you plan on showing the car.. get the C5. If you want the newer style, get the C6.
Test drive both and then decide. List the positives and negatives of both, and sleep on it.

I'm curious why you think any modded car will not hold its value, I actually don't care one bit about performance mods, but they are on the car and it does increase the performance.....Wouldn't a C5 with thousands of dollars of mods, especially if done right, be worth more than a stock C5, I would think a stock 100,000 mile C5 would sell for around $13-15,000, not the $20,000 asking price here.....

Just curious why you would say that.....if parts have been replaced with new ones and the car has been taken of, shouldn't it be okay.....i have owned a few cars that I bought with over 100,000 miles and yes, i did have to do a few things but overall I drove em for a longtime, one of them to 250,000 miles, but that was a 1992 toyota corolla, i drove that car like i stole it and it just wouldn't die.....

Tough choice even though the C6 is a better car, I would be tempted to go for the Mod/Showcar C5 but would not plan on it holding its value as many people prefer to do their own modding and are leary of modded cars. If that is what you want buy it and enjoy it.

There is simply NO 100,000 mile C5 out there worth that kind of money -- unless the mods are gold plated. A car modified like that is next to impossible to sell and most assuredly impossible to get your money back on the mods that have been done -- bottom line, its still a 7 or 10 year old 100K mile car.
Get what you like, but I would think that the C6 is going to be more enjoyable........can you see deciding where to park that C5 if you took it to a parking lot!??

Further, the demographic for a Corvette is generally an older one. One in one hundred will be the young buyer either due to economics or reputation.

Both are too high mileage for my tastes. However, for the sake of having the least to worry about I'd take a stock car over someone else's modded work any day.

Thanks for all the responses....I am not surprised the C6 section would say they'd go for the C6.....I am wondering.....if this same thread was placed in the C5 general section, what would the responses be...
I happen to agree with most of you in the fact that no matter how beautiful the car is and how well modded, the car is still a 1997 100,000 mile C5....that fact is hard to get over......if the modded car was a 2000-2004 C5 with 50,000 miles at the same price, I think that would help the C5s cause,
I also agree with you guys regarding the potential Corvette buyer, which can trend older.
I guess its all a matter of what you want it for.....For sure, the custom C5 will draw attention at the local corvette show, the C6 is just another C6 at the show.....
but I am not buying to show it whatsoever, just to own, drive and enjoy.....

Maybe I haven't been around here that long but I'm yet to hear of a vette old or new with 100K on the clock.
But for the OP (not sure if this rule applies here)...but always go for the newest car you can afford.
Good Luck
