Default New windshield

I have having a new windshield installed this afternoon - any hints or suggestions to watch for when they are doing the install. I only want them to do this one time and correctly.

I'm also looking to replace my front windshield. A nasty rock poped up and craked it right in the middle of the HUD. I also have a super scratch on the inside of the window on the passenger's side.

How much did you pay for the windshield and labor? I heard you have to get a special windshield that is made for the HUD or the HUD will look blurry.

Thanks!

There are several archived threads on this subject, but briefly: be sure the installer has the correct windshield (if you have HUD it uses a special one) Make the installer aware of how the rear view mirror attaches-if he simply pries it off it will most likely not go back on correctly and will wobble. It is held on by a sort of bayonet system/twist to release and if you do otherwise the mounting pins will be bent and you're possibly looking at a new mirror (speaking from experience) The install of the windshield itself I believe is quite straightforward, its' these other issues that can complicate things...

Having had 3 windshields replaced on my own C6 rock magnet, I agree with all said above and this last little tid bit - be certain the inside bottom trim/seal is alligned properly. Sadly, 2 of the 3 were not and proved to be one heck of a challenge to correct!

If possible, do not move the car for a few days after the installation, to allow the sealer to set up.
Also, my glass company tried to sell me an aftermarket windshield. My insurance allows me to demand OEM parts, and I made them show me an invoice for the part from a Chevrolet dealer. They agreed to this with no objections.
If you have HUD, the new glass will have "HUD" reversed out of the black area at the center/top of the windshield. (not visible after the installation)
Do a search on this Forum. There's been a lot of good info here in recent weeks.

Also, while they've got your windshield out, take the opportunity to get some Aerospace 303, or whatever product you prefer on the dashboard down near where the glass makes access difficult.

HUD windshield pricing?

Labor?

Sounds like I need an expert and not some AAA window replacement service to install the windshield.

$1,200 or so for my windshield. Final bill was $1,350. I just paid the $100 deductible

A local mobile service did mine. They worked slowly and carefully, and I don't see where it was anymore difficult than other windshield jobs. After seeing it done, I could do it myself with the proper tools. I would find someone who's done a few C6s, though.
The Chevrolet dealer's retail price on the part (HUD and Onstar) was 966.00. They only charged for one hour's labor, but they (one expert, one helper) took over two hours. I'm sure they made some bucks on the part.

At least your weekend went better than mine. I told you not to hit those birds while you were at Yellowstone.

Yes it is, considering you can get it direct from the aftermarket for right at $300. Realize that GM itself buys these windshields from a vendor, marks them up, sells them to a dealer, who marks them up again, then sells them to the glass installers who mark them up again. Corvette tax.

How about giving us a link to where we could get one for $300? I'm sure that would be a big help to some people here.

Check With Rich at Abel Chevrolet. I can't remember the exact numbers, but I don't think it was a huge difference.

The new windshield is installed - great job. We ran into one problem and was removing the sun visors. You have to break the retainer bezel to remove the visor. The GM dealer said that it is the only way to remove the visor - 13.00 each to replace them. As a side note - there is a small slot in the bevel to insert a flat tip screwdriver to overcome the plastic clip, then you turn the visor clockwise and the visor and arm pop out together.

I really think that this is a poor design, but I guess in this day of plastic fastners its par for the course. GM P/N 15275379 and 15275380.

Last thing the word HUD was etched in the center of the bottom of the glass.
