So, i've been toying with the idea of getting my hands on a Solstice Coupe GXP. I've yet to see a coupe in person, but the pics are great.
Is the GXP a worthy comparison to a C5 or C6? I like to go on short day trips, and eventually get into light auto x'n, maybe the occasional trip to the drag strip as well. I've owned an 02 Z06 before, and was sharing an 05 Z51 6spd with my father until i moved. Would i be disapointed with a solstice?
Thanks.
lol, whoops spelling error. oh well, you know what i mean.
My fiancee has a base model solstice and that car is a TON of fun to drive. The handling and steering is a lot more precise than the vette...it feels like you're driving a go-kart. When I get back in the vette it feels like I'm in a cadillac almost, lol.
It's a little short on power (just has an AEM intake on it now and getting catback exhaust) but the GXP would help that out a ton. GM sells a very cheap kit to up the boost and HP of the GXP to I THINK around 300...which is a ton of power in a 2800lb car.
I had a GXP walk away from my car WOT, so they can be plenty quick
My only problem with them is I feel they're a bit too girly looking and it is a VERY tight cockpit of a car. Getting to the seatbelts, window controls, etc... all takes great dexterity.
Before i bought my vette, i tested both the base and turbo saturn sky, the pontiac solistic and a nissan 350z. Nothing compared to the c6 i bought. I am a big nissan Z enthusiast having previously owned a pristine 1982 280zx 2 by 2, but the vette felt more comfortable and hungrier for speed. But everyone's preferences are different. If you haven't test drove one, you should. It had more pick up then i expected and was impressed by the power, but after testing a c6, I knew there was no other car for me.
I briefly thought about a Solstice. But I bought my 05' C6 much cheaper and it's a much better car in every way. The new coupe hasn't received good reviews. And neither the vert. or coupe has any storage capacity, which I wanted for extended weekend trips.

You must have bought a stupidly cheap C6 or found an overpriced Solstice.
I looked at several GXPs with 15-20K miles on them going for about 20K.
Location: Stafford VA, home of our wolf den. No house break ins to date.
its a fun car, had one for 18 months.. but a totally different driving experience from the C6. Its darty, handles tight but under steers slightly under heavy engine acceleration.. acceleration is admirable.. 0-60 in 5.3...but its thrust is on the top rpm's after full boost kicks in.
its in a totally different class from the corvette......... no comparison.
I owned one before moving up to the Corvette and loved it. No room for travel and tight cocpit. It is a lot of fun on curvey roads and good for around town driving.
As a previous owner of a Solstice GXP they are a great little sports car. The main reason I sold mine was that at 6' tall the Solstice is a tight fit. I drove 80 plus miles a day and it would get very cramped. If you take someone along and want to put the top down forget about taking anything with you unless you want to put it in your or they're lap!! They are know making over 300 hp on the Turbo'd GXP. They are built very similar to the Corvette. They have a full frame structure just like the Vette, double A arm suspension with coil over shocks. If I were to own another one I would get a base model and have an ls3 or ls7 put in it! If I were to choose between a Corvette and a Solstice, Hands down it would be the Corvette!! Nothing compares!!!
Seems to me that there are alot of PREVIOUS Solstice owners who bought vettes, but no previous vette owners who bought Solstii. Does that say it?
I had a C5 Corvette, traded it for my wifes car, bought a Soltice for the gas mileage as a daily commuter (80 plus a day), bought my 08 C6 Corvette, then traded in my Solstice for a 08 Impala as my daily driver work car.....
