Nail Magnet
I have owned three Vettes ('02, '05 and '07) and each has managed at least one nail in a tire....the latest this last Tuesday.....Fat tires, Fat Tuesday?

Yeah I had to have my right rear replaced at 700 miles on my new '09 Z06 because of a roofing nail in the outer tread/sidewall. I'm so glad they come with the 12mo road hazard warranty, Goodyear wanted $750 for a new replacement installed. Didn't cost me a red cent except for my time.
Onstar help sucked at trying to find a Goodyear authorized runflat service shop in my area. I had to search the web, call them and have them order the tire for installation the next day.

Geez, at least mine were easy to fix, no sidewalls at risk, no harpoons....but my wife's Prius; 20,000 miles per year, not a single nail; my Vette(s), less then 5.000 miles per year and, well.....

Two reasons I think.....
1. Twice as much rubber on the ground = twice the chance of picking up a nail or screw.
2. The softer the tire compound the more likely the nail or screw will penetrate.

It took me a while but I finally learned that you get less nails if you don't drive where other people don't drive. A nail in the road will be kicked around by everyone hitting it. Either it will get picked up by some unlucky driver or it will get kicked to the side or center until people stop hitting it as often. If you then come along being one of the few people who drives on the side or in the middle you get to be one of the few hitting it again. You increase the odds you will be the last one to hit it.
Since I like to carve the turns I don't always drive in the center of the lane where everyone else drives. That increases my odds. Just another cost of that big grin on my face.

Wide tires do increase you odds.
Driving scenic back country roads with less traffic also does as well...
You wan tto drive well travelled routes to minimize the risk but that is so much less fun.....

With my '06 coupe I had 2 tires patched
So far with my '07 convertible I have had both left side tires patched. The L rear had 3 nails at one time. Apparently 4 nails is where they must replace the tire. Incredible.

My driver's side rear has had a total of 3 in 2 different tires. My tire shop guy says it is because the front tires run over the nail/screw and kicks it up for the rear to catch. He says wider tires cause it more often.
Anyone notice that there are more punctures in the rear tires? Been true on my car.

I must be the luckiest sob on the forum. I have more than 490,000 miles in Corvettes, have had two flats and three slow leaks due to nails or screws in the past 18 years with Corvettes as daily drivers...
