GM may need to shutdown until they reduce inventory, and then just build cars as they get orders for them. I would not mind waiting on my car to be built, especially if they throw in museum delivery!

Trouble is there is not enough cash flow to pay the bills, to stay in business. Once the first penny is taken from any Gov't source it will mark the beginning of the end as GM (and others) will be told what types of cars to make and not cars that people want to buy,

Yep. Notice how many Cobalts are on the ground. Apparently they can't give those things away. And that's exactly the sort of car the government wants us to drive. (Well, actually the Cobalt may be too high performance and luxurious to please the radical Democrats.) Unfortunately, Corvettes appear to be selling just about as slowly. If we could get car sales up near the level of truck sales, things would be much happier for GM.

I couldn't agree more. It's going to get ugly for GM, but let's face it they have no one to blame but themselves. If GM produced the same quality cars in the 70s and 80s that they produce today, there wouldn't be an issue. GM is learning a fundamental rule of business: the easiest thing to do is to lose a customer, and the hardest is to win him back.

"General Motors said Dec. 12 that it will close 30 plants for at least part of next quarter, cutting production by 250,000 vehicles."
That sir, is not "until the end of the year". More like until March of 09.

Obviously we need to turn off the T.V. every once in a while because "BREAKING NEWS", there are some GM vehicles that actually are selling.

I seem to recall Ford used to sell around a million F-series annually and GMC and Chevy combned to do about the same.

KISS; GM sells to DEALERS at a price GM sets. The price to the Dealer includes GM's PROFIT.
REPEAT; Dealer cost INCLUDES GM's Profit. GM and the Dealer are SEPERATE Entities. GM is a Manufacturer and the Dealers are Retailers.
The only one losing $$ is the Dealers, GM is still getting their price (Cost + Profit), the Dealers are the ones losing money.
Example; You buy a 'Vette at Dealer Invoice and GM makes their money (Cost + Profit) but the Dealer gets Zilch.
