It's toast unless there is a miracle. If it did survive GM has already said that V-8 engines will downsize to V-6's, and V-6's to V-4's. Some power will be retained by using Turbos and direct injection.

Another doom and gloom post. Don't worry the C4 survived 13 years during a bad economy and intense government regulation of the car industry.

It was in yesterday's online WSJ. A copy of the "details" given to Congress was printed. It was said by GM

The Corvette name will survive but what Hybrid 4cly powered econobox they paste the name plate on is still TBD.

Nobody knows for sure what's in store for GM, but I have to think that they will do everything in their power to keep the company alive.

It has been entertaining to sit back and read all the comments from the armchair CEOs though.

The Vette is not going anywhere and not going to be significantly changed. I am 60 and have paid attention through 45 years of Corvette demise discussions. It's just linear thinking that projects the present problem into the future without any consideration for intervening events.
Like when gas was going to $20 a gallon. Oops. What happened?
Or today the front page says gas going to $1 or lower.

Having been there and done that let me second the wisdom of "This too shall pass."

Shouldn't we be concentrating on whether or not GM survives (as we know it)??? It reminds me of a person having a coronary attack yet the doctors what to treat his cold.

I hate to say this but in the BIG scheme of things the absence or presence of the Corvette isn't going to make ANY difference in GM's fate.

I too think the Corvette will stay (assuming of course that GM does). However, I think the trend of extracting more and more power from big V8s whether NA or FI will come to an end.

Yes, gas is cheap again..for now, but the tide has already turned toward pushing for more fuel efficient vehicles. Although the base C6 is very fuel efficient for such a powerful engine, we'll still need to do better in the future.

As others have speculated, I foresee a push toward smaller, higher efficiency engines that are hopefully paired with a lighter weight car. DI and FI will probably play an important role.

Bottom line IMO: C7 yes, but odds are it will have some very notable differences beneath the skin from the C5 & C6.

I owned two of those an 1977 & 1978, served me well for several years. The 77 had 185K when I sold it in 1981.

The Vette will survive. It will be much less powerful in the future. When the clowns in congress finely decide to give the loan there will be tons of strings attached. It’s quite possible the C6, and specifically the Z06 and ZR! will be phased out!

They will want a major increase in economy and a decrease in power. Quite possibly snitch systems set up in ALL NEW cars to report or download information such as speeding, fooling with tunes, miles driven. With all this On star and GPS junk it will be very easy.

I remember the Chrysler bail out years ago, one of the stipulations then was to do away with the 440 engine. So what I say above could happen very easy. The companies want money, they will get it BUT!

I'm 63, have seen a lot of the auto vs. government squabbles in the past, and am worried about the future based on past history.

We have a perfect storm here. A elitist president, a totally wacko congress, and a take it in the a** mindset among a lot of people!
