2005 Bad Gas Filler Cap Notice
FYI, just got a letter today from GM that states that some 2005 Corvettes have faulty gas filler caps.
It says that you have a bad cap if it will not tighten properly or won't come off or just breaks.
Further, it says that you have up to ten years (or 120K miles, whichever occurs first) to return to the dealer to get a free replacement cap but ONLY if the problem occurs.
So far, mine is OK.

Got the letter yesterday, four weeks after my cap went bad. At the time the dealer told me it was not covered under warranty. I paid cash and did not save the receipt.

I got the letter but took care of the problem ages ago. Ed (Pipe Dreams) made me a nifty looking replacement one. Tightens up perfectly and I've never had a problem.

It is funny that you posted this topic. I just bought a 2005 C6 with 19,000 miles on the clock. I am driving it back home from Georgia and the "check gas cap" message comes on the DIC. My car is still in warranty, so I take it to the dealer and they did a test on the car and found nothing but a faulty gas cap. They replaced the gas cap and the problem is gone. It is the seal in the caps. Good topic. Thanks.

The gas cap costs less than $10 for those of you that wish to change it yourself. Gene Culley or Parts Bob can have it to you in a couple of days and it takes about 5 minutes to change. I also changed mine ages ago on my '05. On your next order of genuine GM accessories, just let it ride along. I am truly "dealerphobic" like many here, and for for something this simple wouldn't even consider letting the service dept. gumbas within a country mile of my ride.

I have an 05 and about a 6 weeks ago a notice came up and said
"check gas cap" called the dealer and they said they knew nothing about it and maybe the system needed to be re-programed. I got the notice this week and went to the dealer today and was out of there is 30mins with a new gas cap and no issues
