Default Air Filter for cabin on C6

I drive a 2005 Coupe with 52K miles. I have been reading in the manual about the cabin air filter and need some advice on how ofter to replace the filer. The filter is easy to access but is $70-80.

I have alergies and commute 160 miles per day in the pollen/mold belt between Richmond and Charlottesville.

Pep boys had a replacement filter, but I did not get the price. There have been threads indicating that you can get an aftermarket filter at a parts house for a lot less.

I got the Purolator C25623 for $11.48 plus a few bucks for sales tax and shipping from a well known online source that I am not allowed to name because they are not a forum vendor. Looked just like the $69 version my local stealership sells.

www.gmpartshouse.com sells them for about half of what the dealership charges. If you haven't checked or replaced your cabin filter in a while, I suggest you do.

Here's a previous thread about the filter. Several forum members have bought one for $10 - $13, but indications are it's not a very good filter for that price - no carbon in the filter. YMMV.

Check out post #24 in that thread. I came to the same conclusion when I compared mine side by side.

You can purchase the Air Compartment Filter from Gene Culley (GMPartsHouse.com) at this link:

I remembered that I had bought two of those Purolator filters I mentioned above and the second was still on the shelf in my garage, so I scanned the front and back. Note the warranty. If they lied and it ain't as good as the GM version, then get an ambulance chaser and sue 'em!

I also include below a scan of the filter. Sorry, I don't have a good camera available at the moment. The black material you see showing through (especially at the lower edge where you see a cross section view) is the activated carbon. I looked at it under a magnifying glass and it is definately carbon.

I agree with Wildcatter. The Purolator filter is the way to go. I picked mine up at Advance Auto Parts.
