Default Another Creaky Top Thread

I have searched and found no answer to the fix...

My 08 with the transparent top is snapping and popping like crazy...

Ive had it since December 07 and now that we are having 100+ degree days it is crazy loud.

Ive seen that some 09's are having the same issue, so I am ruling out the dealer.

What is the official fix?

After one year my '08 just started creaking. I had the E-clips in place already. Today I put some silicone grease on the seals and wrapped the front pins with some vinyl tape. This seemed to remove 90% of the noise. Only occasional now. Dunno why, after a year of quiet, it started...

Best known fix is:

- E-clips
- Shrink tube on pins
- Very thin coat of dielectric grease on weatherstrip all around

It's a complete fix for some and partial for others.

Rumor has it that GM will eventually have some redesigned latches but nothing official yet. The previous GM TSB fixes haven't worked.

Good Luck!

Its a shame that GM has no clue as to what they are doing. Im shocked to see new 09s still having the issue. In all the years I have owned Corvettes I have never seen so many different issues with the pop tops like the C6 has had so far. FIVE model years and they still have top issues? Come On!

I konw the feeling. Mine creaks like crazy, have the e clips in and greased up the seal. Have not yet shrink wraped the pins yet but it is almost unbearable.. I'm about to drive it throught the dealers window. Makes my driving experience absolute hell.

Those of us with painted tops have probably more of a problem than those of you with clear tops...My 05 was fine until the top recall, and it's been popping ever since, WITH the e-clips, shrink tubing, and grease...

I've had my '08 coupe (solid top) since Oct. '07 and mine has only been popping the last 2 months or so.

I think it felt left out from what all the other tops were doing!

I did the heat shrink tubing on the pins and also put Krytox on all of the weather stripping. It's been over 1 year since I did so and I haven't had any noise form the roof since then.

The latest and greatest bulletin from GM actually states that they are working on a better solution.. We'll see.

AGAIN, GM has a newly designed handle which is now available. DONT rule out the dealer. Have them order the handles or contact Chris Aude, the GM tech on this issue@ 586-575-0159.

e-clips only worked for a couple months for me then it started creaking again. I tried lubing the rubber seals around the top but that didn't help either.

So....I put axle grease on the rollers and it has been silent ever since. Not one peep (yet).

I haven't read up on the new handles for a while but last I heard they still didn't work. But, it's been a month or two since I last studied this problem. And, since the grease worked I moved on to other things (new tires).

Plus, I'm not sure if this problem is a warranty or recall issue. My car is out of warranty.

Brian, call Chris Aude. I have to believe that because this has been an ongoing warrantied issue, you will be covered. They used my top as the "test" clear top out in the desert SW. An adjustment to the ROLLERS was made about 6 months ago after the completion of the test. It worked! The new handles were installed 6 weeks ago and nary a peep! Im puzzled, though, by some 09s having this issue.

Are the new handles actually available yet?

Last I knew we were still waiting on a TSB and handle availability to 'handle' the problem.

I've tried the e-clip fix and it worked for a month or so. Cleaning the weatherstrips didn't help. I'm going to try the shrink wrap the pins. I thought someone said they were 3/16 but I bought some 3/16 shrink wrap tube at Lowe's and it was too small. I'm thinking maybe 3/8.

I put the painted roof on now for a different look so I'll see how noisy it is tomorrow.

I think it is a real bad design and probably something GM should have caught during their testing. Definitely should have had a fix by the 5th year of production. It seems like all fixes so far are temp fixes.

I might try to get the new handles. The dealer's lube job before only worked for about 200 miles.
