So I ripped the door off my 3 week old vette today...
First let me start off by saying
I was getting ready to go to work today and was almost ready to leave. So being the careful parent that I am I got in my, at that time, beautiful, 3 week old (to me), freshly Zaino'd piece of perfection we all know as the Corvette. Took it out of reverse, started it up and left it to warm a bit.
I was inside the house putting the dog away and setting the alarm when I hear what I thought to be the trash can falling over. I go outside to investigate. That is when I saw my car at the bottom of the shallow sloping slab of concrete that is my driveway. I instantly knew that I had left the parking break off. I thought to myself, "Oh, okay. That noise must have been the front scraping on the driveway as it went into the road. Boy I got lucky it didn't hit anything." That is when I noticed it...
I see the door is open. As I walk up to my once perfect car I wonder to myself, "How could that be open and fit thought the gate? Must have come open at the bottom." WRONG! The door was open as it went down the driveway, hit the fence, the car kept going and it peeled the door off... It seems that the skin of the door was peeled from the frame! I haven't even made the first car payment
Today is a truly terrible day. Damaged car. Insurance will surely go up. Have to pay the deductible. And now I have to live with the thought of what I have done to the car.
I am taking it to Auto Elite Collision Center in Virginia Beach (waiting on tow truck now). I had read on this board that they did good work so I guess that I am unfortunately about to find out.
I'll post some gruesome pics once I can find my camera.

Sorry to hear that. Hope it doesn't cost you too much in time and anguish to get it fixed.
Hope this will cheaply teach you to NEVER, NEVER go off and leave your car running again. Could have been a neighborhood child walking in front of your car, could have been a car thief walk by. Cars don't need to be warmed up for more than a few seconds.

That is about as bad a start to the day I can imagine, good luck with the repairs.

This might not be the PC thing to say here, but I am glad that this was not any worse than it could have been.

This could have rolled out into traffic, or as mentioned before, rolled over a child.
How long have you been driving manuals???

No excuse for leaving that car running unattended. Especially a manual. Parking brake or no brake. Leaving that car in neutral with the brake pulled up is foolhardy. It could have rolled over a child.

Sorry, but I can't feel as bad for you as some of the others here might. The door being open may have been the saving grace in that it took some of the momemtum off the car when it hit the fence.

I'm sorry about the damage to your car. We all do stupid things from time to time. Look to the bright side, it could have been worse.
I'm not trying to add insult to injury but why in the world would you want to warm-up the car? Even in the winter there's no need to do this. As someone mentioned, never leave an unattended car running and never rely soley on a parking brake.
Don't despair, a quality body shop will have it 'good as new' once again. Good luck on the repair and again, sorry about the damage.
