Chevy dealer: "No, you can't sit in the Corvette"
My dad went to check out Corvettes today. There was a Z06 in the showroom and 4-5 regular Vettes on the lot outside. Since he's getting older, one of his concerns is how hard it is for him to get in and out of the car. So, he asks the salesman to open the door to the Z06 so he can sit in it since it was locked. Salesman says ok, goes to get the key, and then comes back and says the manager will not allow him to sit in the car unless it has exactly the options he wants and the color he likes (i.e. we don't want you to order a car from us). According to my dad, the manager did not want to "depreciate the value of the car" by having people sit in it, much less a test drive. So my dad says ok, how about the ones outside? Nope....same deal. Only if you want those options and colors, or else we're not going to let you inside, and they wouldn't even allow him to test drive the regular version. Seriously....what the hell? It's a damn Corvette, not a Ferrari. Dealers really amaze me sometimes....

tell him "Fine, no problem"
And then tell him "I guess you wont be making any money from me"
Then walk out!
Almost every dealer I been to allowed me to sit in any vette they had there regardless.

That really sucks. My son has had two Ferraris over the years and when we'd go down to the Ferrari dealership in Lake Forest, IL. they would always let us check-out their cars. They never told us we couldn't sit in them, quite the contrary, they told us to. Gee, you would think that sitting in them will make them break. Boy, would I run out of there with my finger in the air.

The local Chevy dealer here does that.
When I stopped by the local dealership this past Saturday, a salesman asked me twice if I wanted to drive one of the 08s they had on the lot. The coupe had 4 miles on the odometer.
OP's dad should have made it a point to tell the dealer he wouldn't even consider buying from him with that kind of response.

AYKM!!!!! Are You Kidding Me !!!!!
In mid 2005 I went to a dealership and asked a couple C6 questions, then I asked for a test drive. I look much younger then I am, say 25 years old. I asked for a test drive and the guy says sure lets go! It was even a manual and he asked no questions. The car wasnt in the showroom but under the overhang right in front of the showroom. I jumped in and off we went. I was surprised they let some "punky kid" take the loaded vert but not as surprised as them when I came back a couple months later and placed my order for an 06 with the 5K deposit. When the car came in I wrote a check for the other 45K. Treating me like a real customer made them a sale.

The dealer I bought my Vette from was really good about this type of thing. I called before I went asking about the one I ending up buying, but when I got there the sales guy just handed me the keys and let me drive it. He don't even ask for my ID or give me a sales pitch.
I went to another dealer some time back to look at Infinity's...NO ONE talked to me...they did go to "Richer" looking guy (I'm young and was wearing geans and a tie shirt) and acted like I was not there...I walked out.
Then again the opposite is true...the gang rush of everyone in the dealer is a big turn off. I almost bought an S2000 some time back, but when I told them I would think about it (at this point I had not even driven the car) I had about 6 guys standing around me and my father and would not let me leave...Word to the wise...never block an old Marine when he wants to leave
So, there are many dealers...just keep looking and don't buy until your happy with the service. Good Luck.

Just sounds like a dick dealership. I'm a pretty young guy and when shopping for cars to compare against the C6, a BMW dealer let me test drive a brand new 335i Coupe 6-speed with 2 miles on the odometer, no questions asked. Hell, even the local Ferrari/Aston dealer would let me sit in the DB9 they had on the showroom floor, without fear of "depreciating" it.

Oh yeah, they held you hostage in the brake room with the stale sandwich machine and the non functional soda cooler till you signed the papers. A fate worse than death.

Some dealerships are plain stupid...when I was selling, I wanted you behind the wheel so I could sell you on the car....its so much easier to get a commitment from someone who is behind the wheel of a Vette rather than someone who isnt allowed to even sit in it....what idiots some people are.

Just the opposite in Dallas !
I was at Young Chevy in Dallas today to pick up some oil filters and other stuff for the '07. They have two of the limited ed Z06's on the floor. 12 regular Z's and about twice that in regular C6's. Fleet mgr gently tries to nudge me into buying one of the Z's.
