Default Dealer Latch Bulletin (roof popping noise)

I searched and haven't seen a very recent thread on the ubiquitous "roof popping" issue, so I will post this in hope I'm not repeating something already discussed.

My local dealer says they have both the GM bulletin and the parts in inventory to solve the roof noise issue. Some kind of a clip or plunger probably similar to the solution offered by a CF member back in May. Snaps onto the front roof lever right next to the roller, which is said to be the culprit.

So if you don't want to DIY, your dealer should be able to fix it while you wait.

In hearing some talk at BG Bash, GM will have a factory "fix" out in a replacement handle the end of May. A new "roller" will be in place that won't roll or slide to make the popping noise. I did the C clip on mine and the top didn't pop 800 miles to BG. But I put the 2 handles off my car on my buddies in BG, it didn't pop on way home but begin popping the next day he says. One cheap fix is to apply some epoxy like J-B weld to the area under the roller to fix it in place. This is what GM is doing for temp fix handles they were showing at BG Bash. My GM "replacement" handles didn't pop on way home from BG.

The GM fix is in right now according to my dealer. In the meantime, a small shot of silicone did the trick.

Default Popping Top !!!

I met the engineer from GM who designed the tops on both the Coupe's and the Vert's at the Bash and he replaced my handles on my Coupe right there in the Museum parking area ! I drove back home to the Memphis area around 250 miles and it DID NOT POP ONCE !!! He said they had to redesign the round roller so it would have a flat surface in the back so it will lock in place and not roll .The original design after a period of time and tension would roll and not hold the tension tight enought and this was causing the popping you heard. He said the new handles are out there and the dealers should have them by now!

HEY KENROBB,Thanks for telling me about this at the Bash !! How are you and BOB doing ?

It was a problem with '05's and some '06's. I don't think there were any issues with '07 or '08. But I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.

Good question. Can anyone who has recently taken delivery of an ordered car verify if it has been taken care of? My coupe is scheduled to be built the week after next, so I can't report on this for a few weeks.

Sounds like the fix is to the roof panels themselves then or am I messed up? I've got the dual roof option so will probably require both to be fixed if I understand correctly. If I didn't, I've got the flame suit on so fire away!

No flame suit necessary! I think the problem has always been with the painted tops. I haven't heard of any popping problems with the transparent top.

My 07 has been in twice for the popping noise. I took in last week in hopes of the new fix. I think I was to early. Still pops.

Dan,

See if you can get the bulletin number and/or the new latch part number please from your dealer.

Thanks

The transparent top on my 2006 sounds like popcorn popping on a warm day. I'll be calling my dealer tomorrow about the fix.
