I want a C6 but my wife wants me to get an S5. Thoughts?

The Audi looks like the same old Euro/Japanese coupe styling to me, it will be dated in five years and being an Audi, I am thinking resale will be bad. I got a feeling the vette will still be a sharp looking ride in five years. If your wife told you get a Z06 next time, why not just skip the A5 and go right for the Z06 now, spending this type money on a car, what difference is 20k more for a Z going to make?

There's a 1 year waiting list on S5. I can get the car for cost, which is less than 55k on a 60k sticker.
Think I can get more than 60 for it after 6 months if I keep the miles low?
They had a used one on the lot yesterday and they wanted 5k over MSRP for it.
A new C6.

Well, no, it's not, really. The Vette has no competitors other than MAYBE the Viper and Porsche. Vette guys mostly buy Vettes and nothing else. Other folks buy other things and say bad things about Vette owners. Twas ever so.
I'm not saying it's the greatest car in the world, that depends on what you want in a car. But I doubt very much very many Vette purchasers narrow it down to an S5 or a Vette.
Hands up, everyone that finally picked between an S5 and a Vette?
I'm not saying the S5 is a bad car either. I wouldn't have one, but I'm a Buy American loser, y'know? But ask yourself this, Mr. I-wanted-a-Corvette-for-a-long-time: would you even be considering an S5 if the wife hadn't suggested it?
And none of this has anything to do with how long you've been married. It has to do with two-way respect between the partners. Why is she trying to influence the purchase of YOUR car, anyways? My wife would never do that, not because she is intimidated, but because her primary goal in life is for ME to be happy, just as my primary goal in life is for HER to be happy.
Best of luck with your decision!

You are only 32 years old, have her commit to a compromise plan that states Audi now, BUT, Vette in a few years, and stick to it!
Good luck!

I would check the reviews on the Audi. In the long run, the Audi will give you more mechanical problems than a GM product. I know this all too well.
Besides, you will get more looks and waves in the Vette!!!

I thought I was the only tortured one!
This is exactly why I now have both the Audi and the C6 Z51. I couldn't live without either.
But let me be very clear about this: Although I have been an Audi guy for a number of years now (owned two previous S4 Quattro models, and now have a new S-Line Quattro), The Corvette is a very different type of automobile. Yes, the Audi's are quick and the Quattro makes one feel as if driving on rails, even under harsh weather conditions, but by no means do they have that magic feel or awesome power curve of the C6. These are two completely different animals. My Audi is the daily grocery getter, and my Vette is my special thrill getter. And my honey loves whichever car makes me happy. Life is good

Every one of your comments and replies is pro Audi. It's not what you really want but it seems that your wife has a little more juice in the relationship.

I love Audis, and will be buying my third one, a 2009 A4 Quattro sedan, this fall. Nice styling, excellent handling, superb build quality, and world class interiors ... plus Audi's famous Quattro all wheel drive system ... all add up to a very fine vehicle. Their little 4 cylinder turbo is a class act, and will gain some horsepower and torque for 2009. Their sixes are a smooth as silk. Both engines get excellent gas mileage too.
However....you are not comparing apples to apples here. I would never put myself in a position of having to choose between these two cars. If I needed a sporty family car ... for two or more people with luggage capacity ... there's no doubt I'd go for the Audi. If, on the other hand, I wanted a flat out, world class sports car, there's no doubt that I'd opt for the Corvette. In fact, that's what I did....I have one of each.
Decide on what you really need. If a practical, yet sporty, sedan is what you have to have, go for the S5. The Audi S5 is a fantastic car and one I'd be proud to own. If all you need is one hell of a super car, go for the Vette. Given your circumstances, I'd probably go for the Audi now and wait until you can afford to buy a used C6 as a second vehicle.

Cute kids.
The responses you got are predictable. Maybe you asked the same question at audiworld.com. The answers there would be predictable, too.
I'd get the Corvette. I've had one since 1974 and have never tired of Corvettes. When I had young kids, we drove the mini-van or SUV on family outings.
You need to get the car that puts a smile on your face, whether it's an Audi or a Corvette.

The one response I don't see here and to me it is obvious, get the A6 in the Vette. I have owned both the A6 and then M6. While the M6 is more engaging and gives the driver that connected feeling don't sell the A6 short. Normal cruising it is more relaxing and in the twisties once you understand the paddles you would be hard pressed to run faster unless you are above average with the peddles.
As far as price you should be able to get a pretty loaded 3LT for around $52k-$53k through a forum dealer if not lower. Hell I paid $54k locally for a 3LT with Nav and the F55 suspension.
