The higher the number for your rear end gears, the faster the engine must turn for a given speed........you will be able to accelerate much faster to that speed because the torque of the engine is able to 'push' against the gears more easily, but you will lose top speed as the engine will run out of RPM......with stock gearing the C6 is capable of somewhere around 190 MPH, and can go 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds. With 4.10's, I'll bet that top speed is going to be down to 150- 160, but you will be able to go 0 to 60 in probably 3.8 seconds.........better learn how to shift like lightning too, as it will now require a 1-2 shift!!!
At 80 mph, you are also going to be turning MANY more RPM's than you were before in top gear, and your MPG will be that much worse too.

The transmission supplies some of the reduction gearing (and in the case of our cars, some over driving as well).
The closer to 1:1 the gearing overall, the less the torque multiplication.
Standard gearing in a Corvette with manual gears is 3.42:1 (3.42 revolutions of the drive shaft to 1 revolution of the rear axle (wheel).
Some folks, Like me want to have greater torque multiplication so we can get to speed more quickly. We therefore install a different gearset in the differential - e.g., a 4.10:1 ratio (some use 3.73 and others use a 3.90). The ratio is determined by the number of teeth on the pinion gear (the gear from the drive shaft) and the ring gear (the gear attached to the wheels) (There are many other factors but that is the basic)
Since the rule of "there ain't no free lunch" applies there is a cost. The gain is quickness to speed and the cost is lower fuel economy. The fuel economy suffers some because for any given speed over the road in any given transmission gear, with a higher (numeric) ratio, the engine is turning more rpm. In my case I lost about 2.5 mpg at cruise in 6th gear.

sryy noob here too :o
with 4.10s the top speed will be 150 mph? thats pretty extreme
0-60 in 3.8 is looking so nice tho
good luck keeping the tiers on the ground tho

You could be right, but now its too late to edit my post!!! And if you can pull 6th instead of 5th to top speed with the 4.10's my original estimate of top speed is probably too low as well............BUT, at least I was right about the RPM's on the highway and the reduced MPG, right? I mean RIGHT?????

Thanks, silverspeed, I'm breathing again!!! That is only the 8th or 9th time I've been wrong today, and I was SO hoping to leave work with my errors in single digits!!!! (and yes, I did forget that the top speed with the 6M is reached in 5th....)

The 4.10 gears, or whatever ratio, is the ring and pinion set in the differential housing. The "pumpkin" you see from behing RWD cars that the axle shafts come out of.

One of the best mods I've done. You can call chuck of westchester and he can advise further on the details and where you can have one installed near you.
