Default Daytime Running Lights

I have seen a couple of threads on DRL... From what I can tell there is no way to automatically turn them off on the C6. In my 01 Saab I just pulled a fuse. On the drive home today, I noticed it is only something that was on GMs. I know that they have been doing it for a number of years, my 98 C5 had DRLs

My question.. Does anyone know why GM puts DRL on their cars?? I get the safety concept.. But it is not a mandated requirement. Why are they so adamant about it?

I beleave it's a possible law. Every car / truck since early 90s that I have owned (Ford, Kia, Mazda, Vette) has had DRL of some sort. Either the headlights or turn signal. In looking at possible move to Canada, the Vette has to be reporgramed to not allow them to be turned off like in the US.

I turn mine off every time I drive my car, I cant stand them, I only use them if is raining. I know is a pain turning them off every time but is the only way.

They are on all GM cars because safety sells to the public. (I think it may also be a law). They work great sometimes though (driving across Nevada). I've actually seen a lawyer win a suit for their client that was otherwise at fault because the other person didn't have their DRLs on (fuse was pulled).

It's not a law, otherwise every new car on the road would have them.

In Fbody land, I believe it was a requirement for cars in Canada to have them. All Fbodys were built w/ DRL's starting in 1997, I don't know if it was because the cars were built in Canada, or GM just figured it was cheaper to have 1 type of build for all cars instead of having a US spec, and an export spec. I would guess the later, which would explain why all GM cars for the last 10 years or so has had them. Easier to design and build when you don't have the variations to worry about.

That said, I don't particularly care for them, don't think they work (not in this part of the country where sunlight is abundant anyway), and am glad that GM gives you a way to defeat them in the C6. In the Fbody, you could remove the sensor for the automatic headlights, and by doing so also defeat the DRL's. All the lights functioned normally, but you had to use the switch every time. I'll report back in a month if that similar fix works on a C6 as well.
