Changing oil ??
The owners manual does not give specific milage to change oil. It says to go by the monitor or change the oil at least once a year. How often do you change your oil? Does the Mobil 1 hold up longer than convetional?

I basically go by what the DIC tells me but have kind of adopted a rule that I will change my oil when the DIC tells me I have 30% remaining oil life. Everyone's driving habits are different so each of us will get different times for an oil change. When I had 30 percent oil life remaining, I had just over 10,000 miles on that oil. I just did another oil change a few weeks ago, but in this case, it was because a year had come and gone. I only drove my car about 4500 miles in the last year. The Mobil 1 oil holds up very well IMO.

GM's recommendation is pretty good. Mobil 1 (or any good synthetic) is really good for 15K+ under normal street conditions. Amsoil says theirs can go 35K! I am very conservative and either follow the DIC, or go with a 6K / 6 month schedule if I want to play with the car....

I do not think you can go wrong with following the manufacturers recommendation on either the oil or time to change the oil.
I put 6k on the car last summer and changed it just before storing for the winter.

It works out to once a year on my car. About 5-6,000 miles.
I get it changed in Nov and the car sleeps till the end of winter (mid April)

Mobile one does not break down like conventional oil. With that said, it does get dirty like conventional oil. I change every 3000 regardless of the DIC. For the few bucks why chance it. Time wise, once a year should be no problem in so far as oil break down. I usually end up changing about twice a year as i average 6000 mi. yr. Everyone has their own opinion.

The new synthetic oils are great and even under harsh/extreme driving conditions they last 7k mi easily. I think the key is the quality of the synthetic oil filter you use (Mobil 1 oil filter HEF). Combining the Mobile 1 oil and filter should give you good mileage. Works great on my diesel trk.

Tom,
An Air Force flight mechanic convinced me to switch to Mobil-1 in 1973. At that time it was only available in 55 gal drums from bulk plants. I started using it at that time (getting it in 1 gal. milk jugs) on all my vehicles. Mobil stated 25,000 miles useage in a motor vehicle. On my Volvo around 1975, with 10K miles on the oil, I sent a sample to the Mobil lab for analysis.....they said it was good for "another" 25,000 miles.

Synthetic
Synthetic oils are so superior over petroleum oils that it's no longer a debate, they are simply the best. I use Ams/Oil in all my vehicles, but I change the filter every 3,000 miles no matter what.

This question is asked very frequently.
what kind of person are you?
Logical?
Or
Emotional?
Logical people are content with decades of research on oil breakdown and trust the data and facts behind the oil life monitor and recommendations in the manual. They believe the engineers, they believe the data, they enjoy the benefits of less maintainance, and less wasted oil and filters, and the time saved is much better spent driving these remarkable machines.
Emotional people like to change far more frequently to feel good.

Unless the car is exposed to a lot of neighborhood short trips, 5k between oil changes regardless of whether mineral or synthetic is used has worked fine for me for many decades. My 50 mile a day freeway roundtrip commuter car (06Z06) is now on a 7500 mile schedule and I intend to switch over to AMSOIL motor oils rather than Mobil 1 at the next change.
