GM Cancels V8 Program for Cadillac

The new CTS is definitely marketed towards Lexus, Mercedes, BMW drivers.

GM needs to save the 300M investment in the engine plant to speed up implementation of lighter weight materials in vehicles. GM can whine and bit*h about the CAFE regulations all they want, but the fact is that big vehicles like Caddy's, trucks, and SUVs are all currently at least 1000lbs too heavy.
GM has a lot left in the LSx series, so I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be adopted into Caddy's.

Probably see a twin turbo V6? or better yet a variation of the LS3?
DOHC motors are overrated.
GM should put in a ls3 and call it a day.

thought I read somewhere that GM was consolidating V-8 engine R & D to the truck group, and that engines for the other lines using V-8's would basically have to work from what was available out of that program? Including Corvette

I don't know what is so good about the Northstar. I drove it in a rental, it was not much different than an average V6. I guess it was good for its day, but I still don't see what makes it so special.
How good is the LS motor when it comes to emission anyway, a lot of powerful motors have to be retired because they are put out too much. I dont have the window sticker, I wonder what the LS motor is at. Of course I bet the test would net a completely different result if the gears on the car was shorter creating more RPM.

A Shame
Cadillac has had a V-8 for most of its history. I think they need a quiet, powerful, fuel efficient engine, and I don't think they'll get the low rpm hp with a V-6. I think they'll drive their core customers away. And V-8 engine development at Cadillac affects us too, guys, by not having another group testing and developing ideas. I agree the testing and development needs to focus on weight and fuel economy, but I think going away from V-8's is the same mistake they made back in the 70's. Remember the Cimarron? Ugh.
Personally, I'd love to get a hold of a good Northstar combo - for a hot rod!
Gregg.

Yes the Corvette motor is no longer exclusive to the Corvette. It does devalue the Corvette in my eyes also. I'm sure we will see V6s in the Corvette when C7 arrives as well. The hand writing is on the wall folks.

The 300M idea is my own. If I where in a leading role at GM, I would focus on getting the production costs down on materials that will get the vehicles lighter. The current weight of the trucks/SUVs/large cars will play the most important part of meeting the future CAFE regulations. GM has a great line of engines, they don't need to waste 300M on a seperate V8 line.
