Corvette safety rating
Hey,
Does anyone know anything about how 'safe' a corvette is. The reason I ask is because I always though its really safe because of the sturdy frame around the cabin, but someone that I was talking to said its saposably a 'coffin on wheels'. I tried doing a wuick seearch here and didnt find anything, and also googled it but found safety ratings for everything but for a corvette says it wasnt tested. thanks!

The corvette is actually a pretty safe vehicle. It has a hydroformed cage that sits around you, has great brakes, can get out of it's own way, not prone to roll-overs etc.
In fact I receive a rather large discount on my insurance for the vehicle's safety rating.
Whomever you were talking to is an idiot.

#1= Insurers seem to think it's safe based on injury stats. Who would know better or care more?
#2= Every picture of significant crashes of a C6 are usually accompanied by stories of minimal injuries. Photos are evidence of a strong passenger cell.
GM
Of course, I've never seen any crash tests by NHTSA.

Right on!
When I bought my vette, I was thinking my insurance would go up. Nope, I believe it went down.

The Corvette is an incredibly safe automobile. The design of the frame is purpose built to isolate the occupants during an impact. Whoever told you that it is a coffin on wheels is an idiot.
This C5 pictured below uses a similar frame design to the C6. Notice how the impact is dispursed front to back. This car is on display at the Corvette Museum in BG. The passenger compartment looks virtually unskathed from the impact although the exterior is in poor shape.
Download this short video I made of the crash sequence here:

Here is a photo of the car.

I called my insurance company wondering why the insurance is cheaper than my truck and other vehicles and they said that it was because of the safety ratings that it received. From what I have read, the car is very safe for both the driver and passenger. If you do some research, you will come to the same conclusion!

I asked the question at the factory... why isn't the vette tested like the other cars are...
Its production numbers are low and don't require testing... I was told the vette is rated as 4 stars..

The Corvette gets a great rating by the insurance companies because most Corvettes are bought by Q-tips who drive them only on sunny days, in the left lane, at 15 MPH, for miles and miles, with the left blinker on, before turning right.
