I have the same on order, would also like to hear from someone who has experience with the previous 2006 A6 vs the 2008 A6 2.73.

I just picked mine up a couple of days ago. Hard to compare without one available without the gearing but so far I love it!

do a search on the C6 General section, using the words "performance axle" and you'll turn up two pretty good threads about it

basically, it's worth getting if you want a stronger seat-of-the-pants feeling....

if i got a new model with an A6, i would get it.....

yes, its worth it...

back in '02 i bought a c5 with the performance axle, as the standard axle had a pretty wimpy sotp feel.

i was pretty happy about it then.

i tried out an '07 with the standard axle before i ordered my '08 with the performance axle and and i'm pretty happy about it again.

you will feel a difference.

How would 2.73's be considered "performance" gearing? Am I missing something? It seems like 4.10 gears would provide a much, much stronger SOTP feel?

Unless you have driven a 2.56 I dont think you would notice what a 2.73 does. I have driven both and honestly cannot tell much difference....the '08's extra 30-36 hp masks the 2.73. BUT, if you drag it, it should be worth 1/10 of a second in the quarter over a similarly equipped 2.56. Oh, on the downside, your top speed will drop by about 5-7 mph.

have 600 miles on an a6 with the 2.73. traded in my 2002 manual. started to get on it at 500 miles and i am amazed how fast and refined the 08 is. test drove many 06 and 07, with the 2.56. the 08 feels noticeably stronger. did not get the npp, and i regret that. z51 is great very flat and on rails with the better steering. it is harsh, because the roads are lousy here, but it handles much better than my 2002, that also was a z51. i thought i would never get over letting my 02 go, and also the switch to the a6. i have had the 08 just one week and while the c5 is still an awesome car, i dont miss the c5 at all. getting the 2.73 is a no brainer, and i think a major mistake to pass up, especially in the z51 package for just $1700.

My 08 has 1400 miles on it now. It is my 4th C6. The 08 has the NPP and performance axle. In my opinion it is hard to tell the difference between the two gears. You will absolutely enjoy the NPP exhaust and you must get the Mild 2 Wild switch! The 08 does get 5 MPG less than my 06 did, I attribute part of that on the axle and part on the LS3 however.

Default performance axle

Does the performance axle come standard with the manual/Z51 package or is that even an option? I don't seem to be able to see that as an option on the manual Z51 package.

thanks for the feedback, the M2W will be the first mod I do (second actually...removing the gm 'chicklets' will be first). your milage drop of 5 mpg seems higher than I would have expected, do you think that is due to the 'break-in' of the new ls3?

thanks

My 08 C6 is also a A6, NPP without the performance axle ratio. I have almost 3000 miles on it already and my highway mileage seems to run pretty consistantly arount 27.5 to 28.5. I wonder how much difference the 2.73 would have made? How does that compare? Around town is hard to tell since most of the miles so far had been on the highway around 80mph.

My first mod was also the mild 2 wild and I love it!!

Usually, the shorter the gear, the less top-end speed...
