Default All wheel drive.....

Don't know if anybody suggested this.
The current developments in AWD have made it tons lighter and substatially cheaper to produce. Everybody wants the 500-600hp but realistically...there is NO WAY to put this kind of power down. AWD would make for an incredible supercar (Diablo, 911 T) and traction like trying to bathe your cat!!!

I would absolutly love to see this in a corvette.

Plus with GM's aquisition of Fuji Heavy Industries they already have a great set up!

In the real world AWD is awesome and it is very apparent that additional traction would make the car MUCH faster.

The sledgehammer was single purpose, go fast, go faster, go fastest. It didn't have mirrors either for it's top speed runs, so I don't think it'd pass inspection. ;)

AWD is an incredible feature, just not on Corvette. People want to be able to burn the tires when they want to. I think the additional weight, drivetrain losses, and non-Corvette-ness will forever push it out of our platform.

On second thought maybe AWD isn't the way to go with the Vette due to the emense amount of tradition the Vette has...but I would like to see it in a Vette-derived concept platform or something along those lines.

Good idea, but I think it would go the way of the ZR-1. Awesome option, but not many would buy it. After all, it's all about sales, in the end.

I know what you're saying but look at what Porsche did when they wanted to build an even higher-performing 911 (the current GT2): the first thing they did was to lose the AWD, mainly citing weight reasons; people think that the Vette is heavy enough already- let's not build an awkward, 4000+ lb AWD car like the 3000GT-VR4!!

i know a bunch of guys driving awd on an autocross basically they just hit the gas and point the car around the cones... it takes skill to master rwd plus its tons more fun.

i added the sledghammer to show that you can get the power to the ground without all wheel drive......i think that they need to cut weight out of the corvettes...not add weight no matter what the amount.....

cut the weight to 2800 lbs,, keep some sticky rears and the vette
won't need 4wd too much IMHO. up the HP, cut the weight, I'll be more
happy about the performance potential. I love my ZR1, but it's a bit
heavy!!

I wouldn't mind having the AWD. I think a main reason Corvettes are so heavy is to keep the wheels on the pavement. They could either go with keeping the weight and gluing it to the ground for sure, or cut the weight off and give about the same launch times.
Who knows, they might even put a button in the car to switch between front, rear, and both wheel drive. Vector all the heat to the back, or spread it out. Plus then you don't **** anyone off who is attached to rear wheel drive. Either way, if they make the body anywhere near what I saw in some pictures, I'll be buying a used C5. Just my opinion.

I've driven the Mitsu VR4's....HEAVY.
I knew about the very limited edition non-AWD Porsche turbos as an option to their "regular" AWD twin turbo and I think thats exactly the point I was trying to bring up.... As an enthusiast, I WANT rear wheel drive, like the way it makes the car handle, both Porsches and Corvettes (ALTHOUGH if youv'e ever lifted throttle too fast in a corner driving a 911  ).
All I was trying to throw out there is probably the same thing Porsche thought.....we got this incredible car that will sell to A LOT of people, most of which CANNOT handle it (we're probably 10% of the market/owners that actually CAN) so it was an idea to keep people from getting in over their heads, same place active handling and traction control came from (which most of you probably like to turn off also ;) ).
I'm for a 2800lb, 600hp, manual shifted, REAR DRIVE, land based rocket. How many do you think GM could sell though?..stop drooling....be realistic.

Earlier in this thread I said that I liked the idea of a GM AWD sports car...but that AWD wouldn't be for the vette. How about in the F-Bodies when/if they return? What do you guys think?

It won't be back as an F platform or rear drive I'll bet.
You are on to something though, like some of the import (sorry) cars high end models have AWD when they bump the power up.

I think if you're going to have a 4-wheels-driven beast, give it to Pontiac (after firing their stylists.) After all, they're supposed to be the "exciting" division. Let the Corvette stay with tradition and keep the iffy experiments elsewhere.

Way to heavy for todays Vette. Would make a great option.

but then the technology would be sacrificed (e.i. V8 Fiero) because it is faster than the "traditional" corvette.
